TAKEOVER
ROOMFUL OF TEETH“Roomful of Teeth is revolutionizing choral music,” declared The New Yorker in 2019. The Grammy-winning vocal ensemble — which introduced the world to the work that made Caroline Shaw the youngest Pulitzer Prize for Music winner in history — takes over the New York Philharmonic for a two-week residency. At the center is the premiere of a new work by Shaw, commissioned by the Philharmonic. A Sound ON new-music evening, Nightcaps, and perhaps even a few surprises, round out this takeover.

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
CHICK COREALike Mozart, Chick Corea improvises the cadenzas whenever he plays a Mozart piano concerto. Unlike Mozart, his improvisations are jazzy. The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Chick Corea opens the season performing Mozart (with jazz- infused cadenzas, of course) and returns for the World Premiere of his new Trombone Concerto with Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi, a Nightcap, and a Chick and Friends concert.

GYÖRGY KURTÁG | SAMUEL BECKETT
FIN DE PARTIE“Nothing is funnier than unhappiness.”
In the dystopian world of Beckett’s Fin de partie (Endgame), we see a blind man, his helpless parents, and his hapless servant bumble and bicker as they wait for an end to their suffering — like four final pieces on a chessboard, waiting for the game to end. Kurtág’s music provides the timeless continuum for the eternal question, one that concerns us in the 21st century now more than ever: how will this universal game play out?
The New York Philharmonic presents the US Premiere of Kurtág’s opera based on Beckett’s tragicomedy in a fully staged production directed by Claire van Kampen (Farinelli and the King) and conducted by Jaap van Zweden.

SEASON TWO
PROJECT 1919 Commissions To Celebrate the Centennial of the 19th Amendment
American women gained the right to vote with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. The New York Philharmonic is marking the centennial with Project 19, a multi-season initiative to commission and premiere 19 new works by women, launched last season. The single largest women-only commissioning initiative in history, Project 19 continues in 2020–21.

All Young People’s Concerts® are preceded by YPC Overtures at 12:45pm, where children can meet Philharmonic musicians, try out instruments, and listen to music by Very Young Composers.
