1. Historya. Rama Rai script. - Created / developed by Medhavi
Sri Rama Rai 140 years back based onLakshmanacharya script.
b. Tamil -Ancient Dravidian scriptc. Devanagari - This is a very ancient script used for
nearly 125 languages. The 'Extended (Parivartith)Devanagari' Unicode (unicode.org/charts/PDF/UA8E0.pdf) was finalised by UnicodeConsortium in 1991 incorporating letters /signs foruse of all languages.
The Font Siddhanta incorporate all letters/symbols required for Sourashtra language. This is available on 'Azhagi'
This was taken as the base to prepare the newVarnamala for Sourashtra language by CIIL. This scriptwas declared/ adopted by Sourashtra community on 8thAug. 2009 at a huge convention at Palayamkottai(Tamilnadu).d. English (Roman) script - International script used
by several languages like English, German, Frenchetc. This script is being used by SourashtraNetizens in the Internet.
2. Progress in usage.a. Rama Rai Script - In the 19th century the original
Sourashtra script was not available due tohistorical reasons. Sourashtra Saints like SrimadVenkataramana Bhagavathar and Kavi Sri VenkataSuri used Telugu script. Sri Natana Gopala NayakiSwami used Tamil script. Geetha SadhavadhaniSri T.R. Padmanabhaiyer (and some others) usedDevangari script.
Sri Rama Rai created his script and spent his lifesavings in propagating this script. A large number ofstudents learnt the script.
His Shishya parampara continued withSri Venkatachala Sarma, Sri O.K. Ramanadam and hisdisciples like Sri T.V. Kubendran (Bhashabhmani),Sri O.S. Subramanian (Sourashtra Vidya Peetam),Sri Mohan Ruppa (Shresta Sourashtra Sahitya Sabha),Sri Tada Subramanian (Bhasha Samman wardee),ASri K.R. Sethuraman (Bhasha Samman Awardee),Sri KasinAnandam, Sri M.S. Ramani, Sri C.R.Saranath,Sri T.G.Dwaraganath and many others.
Sri Rama Rai was honoured and life time pensionwas paid to him by the community. Later his statue wasput up in a temple at Madurai and his script was writtenon the temple wall.
A change came about in 1920 when thecommunity decided to preserve Rama Rai script, but touse Devanagari script for all practicalpurposes. This was reaffirmed in 1981and more recen t l y in 2009convention at Palayamkottai.
The usage of this script hasbeen coming down over the years, inspite of all attempts by its supporters.
Other than Sri Rama Raihimself, no other writer / author /scholar / composer (like NayakiSwamin) used this script for theircompositions / creations.b. Tamil script - As maximum
A comparison of different scripts being used for
Sourashtra languageSourashtra population is in Tamilnadu whichfollows two language policy, there has been noscope for learning our mother tongue in schools. Our students learn Tamil well and use it for allpurposes. Hence many of our writers use Tamilscript for writing in our language with numbers/super s ripts for pronunciations which are notcavailable in Tamil script. Sri Tada Subramanianwrote his books in Tamil script and was awarded'Bhasha Samman'. The journal 'Bhashabhimani'started 40 years back with sole purpose ofpropagating our language in Rama Rai script used50% contents in Tamil script. In due course theproportion of Tamil has increased to 98% withRama Rai script usage only 2% ,( as seen in thelatest Deepavali special issue).
This indicates the degree of support to Rama Raiscript even from abhimaanis of this script, leave alonethe general public (especially the youth) who are notcoming forward to learn it either in personal classes orthrough the Internet. And their parents also do notencourage them to learn this script as they feel thatthere is no practical utility in learning this script and thetime can be spent more usefully to learn Devanagari(which is the script of Hindi, our National Officiallanguage, very useful for going to any part of India fortheir career).c. Sourashtri (Parivartith Devanagari) - This script
has been used for Sourashtra Bhagavad Geethab y S r i T.R . P a d b h a n a b a i y e r a n d b ySri Venkatachala Sarma to transliterate Sri RamaRai's literature.
After 2009 Declaration, the Sourashtri PracharSabha printed a text book and held classes for schoolstudents at many places in and around Madurai, makinguse of the teachers trained by CIIL in their workshopsheld at Madurai and Mysore (as requested by ourcommunity representatives). Hundreds of students wholearnt this script were given certificates in a function atMadura i a t tended by severa l Sourash t rarepresentatives. Confederation and The SourashtriPrachar Sabha representatives visited CIIL, Mysorerecently and submitted a Letter requesting them tofurther give guidance and support to propagate ourlanguage in this script and also to include Sourashtralanguage in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution (aPrayer petition for which had already been submitted tothe Gov f India on 2nd Aug 2016 jointly byernment o ustthe Sourashtra Madhya Sabha, the SourashtraEducationists Confederation and the Karnataka UnitedSourashtra Organisation (KUSO).
The Saurashi Academy at Dindigul has printedtext books for classes 1 to 5 and is regularly conductingclasses followed by issue of certificates. They are

writing and printing books in our language. Many bookslike Sri T.R.P.'s Bhagavad Geetha were transliteratedinto Tamil script and these versions are selling morethan Devanagari versions.
'Bhashabhimani' also uses Tamil script for morethan 95% of its contents to suit the readers.
The Sourashtra Book Trust has brought out
several sourashtra books/ literature in Tamil script.c. Sourashtri (Parivartith Devanagari). -
This script has caught the fancy of our youth and
their parents due to the following advantages.1. By learning our mother tongue in Devanagari
script, we can also learn Hindi (our Official/National
language). This will facilitate our youth to have vast
scope for employment and commerce in all States of
India. If required, Sanskrit, our language of scriptures
can also be learnt. (In fact it is said that around 125
languages use Devanagari or related scripts).Devanagari is the descendant of our earlier
ancient scripts 'Sauraseni Prakrit' (Evolution of scripts)
and is own script for our Indo Aryan language,
Sourashtram. The Unicode as mentioned earlier was issued by
the Unicode Consortium in 1991. Siddhanta Font
incorporates all pronunciations of all languages,
including Sourashtri. This is available on 'Azahgi' also.
d. English (Roman) script -This is the International script and has been used
for numerous languages. Our Sourashtras abroad and
in other States of India find it easy to use this script for
writing our language (subject to their learning correct
usage to suit the pronunciations).
starting a Diploma course and 'Play school' for childrento teach our language in this script.
The Saurashi Academy is bringing out a dailyNewsletter in this script. They have also published anumber of Text books and other books.
'MET VAKH, SHEEL VAAT' , a book in poetryhas been written Sourashtri and Tamil scripts bySriA. K.R. Subramanian of Dindigul based on Tamil poetAvvaiyaar' s 'Nalvazhi' and 'Muudurai'. He has alsowritten another book of original poetry 'Damar', releasedrecently. Sri K.R. Ravindranath has brought out'Kadambari Katho' (original first novel in Sanskrit) inSourashtri in three scripts - Parivartith Devanagari,Roman and Tamil. This is now being transliterated in toRama Rai script by Dr. Gova dhanan Laguduva.r
Sri Ravi Kondda is regularly writing about ourscriptures and giving Bhagavad Geetha slokas in threelanguages/scripts including Sourashtri script.
(I had also written the word by word translation(Padavurai) in English for a number of chapters ofBhagavad Geetha of Sri T.R. Padmanabhaiyer inSourashtri (Devanagari script) which were posted in'Palkar.org' a few years back).d. English / Roman - This is mostly used in Internet.
Sri O.S. Subramanian and Sri K.V.Pathy started athread 'Sourashtra moTTum' in 'palkar.org' adecade back. It caught up and now majority of ourNetizens are posting in our language using Englishscript. Sri O.S.S. prepared a simplified 'Notation'for this purpose and Sri K.V.Pathy furtherelaborated it by writing 'EASY LESSONS'( ).www.kvpathy.blogspot.com
3.Advantages /Arguments in favour of the scripts -a. Rama Rai script -
This script was specifically prepared by Sri RamaRai in the 19th century, in the absence of letters for thespecial pronunciations of our language (nasal sound, half yakaaram, short 'e' and 'o') in other scripts. This isconsidered as our own script and we get 'guruttu'(Identity) and 'Ghenam' (respect) by using this script. Infact this was learnt and used by thous nds in his timeaand later also. Even now there are hundreds of peoplewho know this script. It is used by some people forprinting the wedding invitations and Panchangam.
A conference was held at Dindigul (TERKEMILNI) a few years back to encourage awareness andlearning of Rama Rai script.
At present a Facebook group 'AbhyaasukChevduvo' is very active to propagate this script, especially by the young 'Sourashtra Bhushan' Sri KondaSenthil Kumar.b. Tamil -
This is known to all Sourashtras in Tamilnadu(though not in other States). This is extensively used for

SUPPORT LEADS TO SUCCESSThe total success of a community oriented event or a
function mostly depends upon the total involvement andcommitment of the people for whom such an event or afunction is conducted. KUSO has been conducting“Global Jadhaga Parivarthanai Mela” since 2004. Wehave so far conducted 25 such ‘Melas’ twice in a year.
The response from the parents of “Nowrin / Nowran”is ever increasing and is very encouraging for theorganizers of KUSO. We are making elaborateadvertisement by various means. Wall posters are alsoprepared and arranged to be pasted in various big citiesand towns for which we get support and cooperationfrom various people. We take this opportunity to thankthe following personalities from different towns in TamilNadu, who have come forward for lending assistance fordistribution of notices and for pasting wall posters for the25th Global Jadhaga Parivarthanai Mela.
Members of KUSO and office bearers appreciatewith gratitude, the efforts and the contributions of thefollowing Sourashtrans, towards the success of the‘Mela’held on 26th March 2017:-Arni : Sri K.K. Chandran,
