Dear Taylors Hill Community,
Resilience- Managing life’s ups and downs
This term at THPS we have a focus on developing our resilience. Adults sometimes look back on their childhood as a time when they were always happy, but life’s ups and downs are a part of childhood too. Children need to build skills for resilience to be able to both enjoy good times and deal with hard times. Helping children learn how to manage life’s ups and downs and build their coping skills supports their mental health and wellbeing now and into the future.
Skills and qualities that help children cope with life’s ups and downs:
• Trust - that the world is safe and that there are caring people to help
them.
• Belief - in their ability to do things for themselves and achieve their
goals.
• Feeling good - about themselves and feeling valued for who they are by
their parents and carers.
• Optimism - that things generally turn out well.
• Ability - to manage their feelings, thoughts and behaviours.
Children develop these skills and qualities over time, initially through their experiences in coping with small stresses with help from supportive adults. When bigger stresses come along, even though at first they might feel quite distressed, children can draw on what they have learned about helping themselves to cope and feel better. Looking to others for support continues to be an effective way of coping.
How are your child’s resilience skills developing? Resilience is the ability to cope with life’s ups and downs. Children’s resilience is enhanced when they:
• are loved by someone unconditionally
• have an older person outside the home they can talk to about problems
and feelings
• are praised for doing things on their own and striving to achieve
• can count on their family being there when needed
• know someone they want to be like
• believe things will turn out all right
• have a sense of a power greater than themselves
• are willing to try new things
• feel that what they do makes a difference in how things turn out
• like themselves
• can focus on a task and stay with it
• have a sense of humour
• make goals and plans, both short and longer term.

2018 Prep Transition
Our first 2018 Prep Transition session will be on this Friday the 3rd of November from 9.15-10.15am. If you have a child starting Prep in 2018 and you have not enrolled them please do so as a matter of priority, as this will enable them to participate in this important program which will assist them with a successful transition to school.
2018 Notice of School Transfer/Absence Planning for 2018 is well underway, so if your family is taking a long period of absence from the school or is transferring to another school next year, I would appreciate if you could notify the office in writing as soon as practically possible. This would greatly assist the school in planning for next year.
Curriculum Day- Monday 6th November 2017. Just a reminder that we will be having a Curriculum Day this coming Monday, therefore students are not required at school on this day. We hope that our families enjoy this extra time together. On this day our staff will be involved in Professional Learning on the Victorian Curriculum. Danielle Stella

LEARNING CENTRE NEWS ! This week in the Learning Centre, we are preparing our display for
Remembrance Day 11th November. All students are being asked to colour a poppy or add a message of thanks which will to be added to each year
level’s wreath. These will be displayed on the wave wall under the banner:
Taylors Hill Primary School Remembers and is Thankful
This is a good time to discuss what the day means to you, your family,
our community and our country.

THE LEARNING CENTRE NEEDS YOUR HELP – PLEASE!
Once again the Learning Centre is putting out the call for help in covering new books. Mrs Sartori and Mrs Baron have
been busy purchasing new books and have quite a few catalogued and ready to go, they just need to be covered.
Thank you to the parents who volunteered after the last call out on Facebook, you were all marvellous! This is a great
way to assist the School especially if you are working parent or have pre-schoolers and it is difficult to help in the
classroom. You would receive 10 – 15 books, instructions, adhesive covering (great quality – no bubbles). All you need is a good pair of scissors and a little time. Please contact
the Learning Centre if interested.
Thank you.
CURRICULUM DAY
Monday 6th November On this day, THPS staff will be continuing their professional learning on The Victorian
Curriculum.
