Auto CAD is a CAD (Computer Aided Design or Computer Aided Drafting) software application for 2D and 3D designand drafting.
Developed and sold by Autodesk, Inc. Initially released in late 1982.
It currently runs exclusively on Microsoft operating systems.
Introduction
Why it is so Popular in Architectural &
Construction Industry?
“AutoCAD is one of the most popular Computer Aided Design programs developed to help professionals design and analyze buildings or structures without having to draw up plans manually.
While CAD applications prior to AutoCAD involved large amount of computing power in the form of gigantic computers.
AutoCAD has simplified its operations to optimize it for the IBM PC, allowing people to work from home or on their own workstations.
AutoCAD uses DWG as a standard file format which is now largely accepted as a standard for all CAD design and drafting work.
As per industry estimates there are more than 1 billion DWG files are in operation around the world today
AutoCAD has many in-built tools to help architects or designers work on individual projects.
The software is comprehensive in its nature focusing more on 2D/3D renderings and also in corporates industry standards for design and animations.

Block and External reference means sharing and reusing the resource of drawings.
You can easily to insert another drawing in current drawing.
you can not only define your block and attribute block, but also you can edit them easily with In-place
Edit function, by double-click, you can edit the relevant block.

Design Center offers you a convenient way to manage the issues of your drawing such as dimension style, blocks, text
style, line types and layers.
Just drag and drop, you can apply them from any source drawing to your current drawing.

Once you have completed a drawing, you can use a number of methods to output the drawing. You can plot the drawing on paper or create a file for use with another application. In either case, you select the plot settings.

Features of 3D Designing
You may have already figured out why CAD has many advantages over manual drafting.
One big advantage is that once you've drawn something, you shouldn't have to draw it again.
INTRODUCTION
- WHY 3-D?
If you manually drew a house plan, you would have to draw a front elevation, side elevations, and possibly a perspective view.
With 3-D CAD model, you can generate views from any angle either inside or outside the house and animations.
Afterwards, if your client needs something changed, you can then make the changes once
You'll be learning the 3-D concepts in the following order:
Isometric Drawings (not true 3D)
Wire-frame (very basic 3D)
Surfaces / Regions (primitive 3D)
Solid Objects (advanced 3D)
A way of displaying real-world object in a more natural way by adding depth to the height and width. This system uses the X Y and Z axes
3-D
A concept of displaying real-world objects on a flat surface showing only height and width. This system uses only the X and Y axes.
2-D
Boolean operations
Commands that allow you to add, subtract or intersect solid objects in AutoCAD.
3-D CAD TERMINOLOGY
A simple way of achieving a '3-D' appearance using 2-D drawing methods.
Isometric Drawing
A basic solid building block. Examples would be boxes, cones, cylinders.
Primitive
2-D area consisting of lines, arcs, etc.
Region
A complex way of adding photo-realistic qualities to a 3-D model you have created.
Rendering
3-D model creating using solid 'building blocks'. This is the most accurate way of representing real-world objects in CAD.
Solid Model
The user co-ordinate system. This is defined by the person drawing to have easier access to portions of a 3-D model.
UCS
A 3-D shape that is defined by lines and curves. A skeletal representation. Hidden line removal
is not possible with this model.
Wire-frame Model
Viewport
A window into your drawing showing a particular view. You can have several viewports on your screen. Different from the viewports used in plotting.
The extrude command raises the shape of a 2D outline into a 3D solid. For example, a circle would be extruded into a cylinder.
Extrude
Press Pull
Press pull command is used to raise shapes of 2D outline into 3 D in much simpler way or with single command.

3D Objects: Primitives
Extrude: It is the method to convert 2D figure into 3D giving it a specific hieght.
Creating Solids
Sweep : Using this u can make any type of three 3D object on a given path.
Loft

Creating Solids
Materials
You can now fly or walk through your model using navigation similar to a first person video game. You can record, save, and play a scene. You can move the camera in such directions which you want to visualize.
Walkthrough
In Rendering we can create a photorealistic or realistically shaded image of a three dimensional wire frame or solid model. It shades the scene's geometry using the lighting you've set up, the materials you've applied, and environmental settings such as background and fog.
