Consiste en el reacomodo de los orbitales atómicos del nivel de valencia mediante la mezcla de cierto número de orbitales puros diferentes, para oibtener orbitales híbridos equivalentes, distribuidos simétricamente en el espacio.

La hibridización sp3 se realiza con un orbital “s” y 3 orbitales “p”, resultando cuatro orbitales híbridos sp3.
Los orbitales híbridos tipo sp3 se orientan hacia los vértices de un tetraedro regular.

Nótese como los cuatro orbitales híbridos sp3 del carbono se unen , cada uno, con un orbital s de cuatro hidrógenos,
para formar la molécula del metano CH4.

La hibridización sp2 se realiza con un orbital “s” y 2 orbitales “p”, resultando tres orbitales híbridos sp2.
Los orbitales híbridos tipo sp2 se orientan hacia los vértices de un triángulo equilátero, formando .angulos de 120 º entre ellos.
