Investigating Earth’s Seasons:Pre-Investigation

1. Identify the equator and the Earth’s axis on your model. 2. Identify the sun in your model3. Make sure the Earth’s axis is tilted at a 23 degree angle in the cup4. Make sure your Earth’s North Pole is pointed towards Polaris, the North Star

Seasons on a Plate

Procedure:

1. Place the foam ball at Position A.

2. Shine the flashlight towards the Earth.

3. In your journal, record your observations about the area of Earth that receives the most direct energy.

4. Move the area counterclockwise through Positions B, C, & D.

Teacher Demos and Explanation

Seasons

Day and Night

*The angle at which the sun’s rays strike the Earth‘s surface is very important. The more direct the rays, the more energy each square unit of the surface receives and absorbs.

*The Equator receives the most consistent direct light. (the length of day and night does not change over the year)

*The North and South Pole receive the most inconsistent and indirect light (the length of day and night changes drastically over the year).

Season’s Independent Practice

1. Create a diagram of Earth and Sun, illustrating how seasons occur.

2. Label: Sun, each season, and the movement of Earth.

3. Explain the motion of the objects and any additional information that is important to understanding why we have seasons.
