Page 6 “In learning you will teach and in teaching you will learn.”—Phil Collins
What’s In a Teacher? I recently attended a youth gathering and was blessed to listen to speaker, Jason Seaman. Jason is a teacher in Indiana, and is the one who stopped a school shooter by jumping on top of him after he entered Mr. Seaman’s classroom. Jason was shot, along with another student , Ella, who survived. This man is truly a hero, and it made me ask myself a couple questions. Would every teacher be able to do this? Would I be able to do this? Through my younger years, I definitely was the person to “run from a situa-tion”, to escape anything uncomforta-ble was my solution. But, as I have aged and been around youth more and more, I believe I would be more likely to face that same situation head on. BUT, we never really know what in-stincts would kick in unless we are in the situation, which we pray we never have to be. I also don’t think we can expect every teacher in the world to be able to “jump on a shooter”. Be-cause each teacher is still their own individual, with their own instincts and beliefs. What I do know is no matter what their choice would be, a good teacher’s first instinct is to protect those kids no matter how they choose to do it. The next conclusion I have made is to see that every good teacher is a hero each and every day. They obviously are doing their jobs by educating our kids, but above that they are protect-ing them, parenting them to some de-gree, shaping them each day into kids who will become successful adults. Think about how much time teachers spend with our kids each day...more than we do. What they deserve in return is our support. As parents, we can take what the teacher is giving our kids and “back it up” at home by talk-ing to our kids about what they are learning. Talk to them about respect-ing their teachers at school no matter
what. When we discuss our teachers with our children, only be positive, do not insult or degrade the teachers in front of your kids. Although teachers are human and make mistakes just like all of us, the really good ones have our kids’ hearts in their hands and love each and every one of them. They want only the best for them. Being around a couple teachers for a few days also made me see some oth-er positive attributes that not only make up a great teacher, but are also things we as parents and adults who interreact with kids at some point can develop ourselves. I noticed if a question is asked of a group in general, the teacher does not answer the questions, but let’s the students do this. They may know the answer, but they also know that the youth is the one who needs to learn. They do not need to “one-up” the kids.
The great teacher also sees every situ-ation, whether tiny or large, as a “learning experience” for the student. If a student is always asking for the a answer before they even put any thought into the question, the teacher will say “what do you think?” And if the teacher is expecting the students to ask questions to learn, their re-sponse when the students do ask the questions, is not to degrade and make them feel bad for not knowing, but to direct them to the answer instead of just giving it to them. The final thing I understand is we can ALL learn from teachers. We can ALL be teachers….not literally, but practi-cally…...we can be a “teacher” to eve-ry one around us.. Every situation can be a teaching AND learning situation. So, at every moment, be open minded to teaching or learning. Good luck to all the teachers in our Diller-Odell Schools and everywhere!
