What can we do?

We can share

resources!

But I don’t want to share

resources with you…

I heard about a software called Argia,

we can share resources as if we

were the owners!

Finally all of them decide to share the same physical network to save money

Introduction• ARGIA allows end-users to:

treat network resources as software objects provision and re-configure connections within a single domain or across multiple domains

• CHRONOS reservation system that allows users to:perform advance and immediate reservations of the networks resources without the need of knowing the inner topology

• HPDMnet network research initiative developing an international high performance service for high quality, large-scale digital media that is required by bandwidth intensive applications

• IaaS for Optical NetworksArgia is the IaaS Framework based system to create infrastructure as a service solutions for optical networksArgia is the evolution of the UCLPv2 software; it is an ongoing effort towards creating a commercial product that can be deployed in production optical networks

• Main goalenable infrastructure providers to partition their physical networks/infrastructure give the control to third parties (infrastructure integrators or VNO administrators) during a period of time

• Third partiesuse the partitioned infrastructure in housedeploy some intelligent software on top of the resources (like Chronos) to provide services for their end userspartition the infrastructure and rent it to other users

Chronos• Reserve network resources in advance or immediately• It handles routing not necessary to know the inner

topology• Users select:

endpoints to connectstart and end times BW needed

finds path (Dijkstra) and reserves the resources for requested time if available

• Possible users:human personother type of network aware applications (grid middleware, i.e. Harmony Project)

HPDMnet (High Performance Digital Media Network)• International consortium of research centers has formed a

cooperative partnershipaddress key challenges and opportunities related to using dynamically provisioned lightpaths for High Performance Digital Media (HPDM)

• HPDM initiative is designing and developing a GLIF service, instantiated at GOLEs that will be usable by any large scale digital media application, or other data intensive application

• The HPDMnet research testbed has multiple sites within the GLIF infrastructure in North America and Europe

• The network is dynamically provisioned by Argia and

Chronos

15

HPDMnet demo in the SC08 event• Main goal:

create a L1/L2 network instantiation (the HPDMnet network) composed by resources from different physical networkscreate end to end reservations between the different end sites attached to the network to be able to stream video in HD

• Resources from different physical networks: Pacific Wave GOLE, STARlight GOLE, CANARIE, a testbed of Nortel Networks at Ottawa, Netherlight, i2CAT, SARA and UvA

• Argia used to create the network by means of leasing the different parts of the physical networks of each domain involved in the demo

• Chronos used to create reservations of the available resources

16

HPDMnet demo in the SC08 event ARGIA:

1. The Infrastructure Providers first created the physical network for their domain (RMC)

17

HPDMnet demo in the SC08 event ARGIA: create virtual resources

2. The resources from the different independent domains were virtualized and exported to iCAIR to be used to create the HPDMnet testbed

18

HPDMnet demo in the SC08 event ARGIA: import virtual resources

3. Resources were imported by the Argia Administrator at iCAIR (Virtual Network Operator)

19

HPDMnet demo in the SC08 event ARGIA: complete the resources list

4. Links were created between the edge interfaces of each domain to create the final HPDMnet Resource List

Users of the HPDMnet can create connections, reserve resources via Chronos, partition or bond resources, etc., all without having to contact the network administrators from each domain

21

HPDMnet demo in the SC08 event

• Chronos used to create some reservations from each one of the different sites attached to the testbed to the demo venue located at Austin, Texas

• The reservations were created specifying a relative start time between them

• Video streaming in HD was used to validate the connections

Conclusions• Argia

multiple users can share a common physical optical network substratecreate their own isolated network on top of it by means of the virtualization of the network resources

• Chronosadvance and immediate reservations of the virtualized network resources can be performed, without knowing the inner topology of the networkusers can know in advance if the resources they will need to establish some connections will be available

28

Future Work

• At present, there is no commercial version of Argia software yet, but it is under active development

• Chronos will be able to perform reservations of ethernet connections by means of Ether

• The HPDMnet testbed is being extended to Asia
