PREAMBLE

When we first thought of creating a tribute album in honour of my father's 80th birthday, it seemed like we could take nothing for granted. Faced with the immense work he created with Rene Goscinny, we proposed something unique, something that would please and surprise him and, at the same time, something that would please you, the reader. How to amaze the best in the business, while waking the curiosity of all the readers worldwide? How to make everyone involved have fim, as well as the birthday boy himself?

With the team of Editions Albert-Rene, Bernard de Choisy and I found the answer: the best could only come from artists; other artists met in secret to blow 80 candles. And they responded in a fireworks display of vignettes about our favourite Gauls, like you've never seen! They were left to exercise their many talents, letting their feelings towards the man show in their lines and bubbles. It was these amazingly personal stories intersect into an album that mixed with the universe created by two out-of- this-world comic book creators. This book is also in memory of Rene Goscinny, who left us all too soon, 30 years ago.

We hope that you will he delighted with the selection of stories on in this birthday album. For us, a beautiful tribute to the career of the son of Italian immigrants could not be made. Thanks to the artists, and long life to comics!

THESE BLORKS ARE CRAZY!

Note from the original Editor

So many writers and artists, all from so many different different cultures and backgrounds, all wanted to take

this opportunity to honour the man they regarded, with a tiny handful of others as their Master and friend. For an amateur Asterix, this looks like a party!

This album, which brings together so many variants of Asterix, is testament to the unique role of this

legendary series, and shows that it deserves to take its place in the pantheon of comics. Depending on your tastes, you may prefer one story over another, but they all follow the source code of comics. This code which, on a balcony in the suburbs of Paris,

August 1959, in less than one hour, became one of the greatest successes in comics in the 20th century!

This album should therefore be a success, even if it is not created by the usual supects. That means that, when the comic gets involved, this art form should

reunite all dreamers.

This success will finally mobilize Asterix and will, in the Autumn of 2007, be an official ambassador

to the service of a capital case, that of the defense of children. In fact, the bulk of the profits are

intended to support the work of the Ombudsperson for Children,by including better knowledge of

the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Happy birthday to Albert, thanks to the artists in this book, apologies to those we couldn't

get. This book's already thinner than expected - maybe we'll get you for his 100th

birthday album...
