What the Heck is Collective Impact?

Collective impact brings people together, in a structured way, to achieve social change.

Collective Impact

It starts with a common agenda. That means coming together to collectively define the problem and create a shared vision to solve it.

Common Agenda

It establishes shared measurement. That means agreeing to track progress in the same way, which allows for continuous improvement.

Shared Measurement

Mutually Reinforcing Activities

It fosters mutually reinforcing activities. That means coordinating collective efforts to maximize the end result.

Continuous Communication It encourages continuous communication. That means building trust and relationships among all participants.

Backbone Organization

And it has a strong backbone. That means having a team dedicated to orchestrating the work of the group.

Collective Impact Results All of these conditions together can produce extraordinary results. Collective impact takes us from common goals to uncommon results.

• Design and implement the initiative with a priority placed on equity

• Include community members in the collaborative

• Recruit and co-create with cross-sector partners

• Use data to continuously learn, adapt and improve

• Cultivate leaders with unique system leadership skills

• Focus on program and system strategies

• Build a culture that fosters relationships, trust and respect across participants

• Customize for the local context

Collective Impact 8 Principles of Practice

Understanding Problems

A premise of the collective impact approach is that not all problems are created equal – some are simple, some are more complicated, and some are truly complex. Each type requires a somewhat different approach to solving them. A simple problem is baking a cake – the right “recipe” is essential, but once you’ve discovered it, replication will get you almost the same result every time. A complicated problem is sending a rocket to the moon – the right “protocols and formulas” are needed, as are high levels of expertise and training. Experience is built over time to get to the right result, which can be repeated over time with the expectation of success. An complex problem is raising a child - there are no “right” recipes or protocols that work in every situation. There are many outside factors that influence the situation, and every situation is unique. Experience helps, but in no way guarantees success.
