Unit President’s Message

We supported the Great Lakes

Sectional Tournament in

Dayton, OH, July 1st to 4

th. We

took 1st place in the Round

Robin games. We played with

a couple from Cincinnati, OH,

who was in their late eighties,

and they were at the top of their

game. I hope I will be able to

compete as they did when I get

up in age. Several people

expressed their enjoyment of

attending out Grade “A”

Tournament in Tunica, MS.

We were able to field one team

at the July ACBL Swiss Team

game at M.A. Lightman last

month; we didn’t come away

with the gold but had a good

experience in team play. We

are still leaving room for

improvement. Clubs across the

nation are having bridge classes

and team practice games in

preparation for our ABA

Summer National Tournament.

The only bridge class I am

aware of is at the Orange

Mound Duplicate Bridge Club

on Tuesday Mornings at 11:30

a.m. For new players or

returning players who want a

refresher course, this is a great

opportunity. Maxine Garcia,

instructor, is a long time ABA

member and has a wealth of

bridge knowledge and expertise.

Our Southern Sectional

Tournament will be in

Birmingham, AL, September 22

to 25th

, start planning to attend.

Last year we had a large

Memphis showing. Hopefully,

this year we will exceed that

number of players in

attendance. The Section’s

election will be held at that

tournament. If you don’t plan to

attend, you need to submit your

absentee ballot before August

30th

. Please don’t miss your

opportunity to vote.

It’s time to start planning for

our next Memphis Bridge Unit

officers; all seats are open with

a new position of “Kings &

Queens Newsletter” Editor.

Point Coordinator

The 2017 ABA Spring National

will be in Reno, NV, and the

Summer National in Chicago,

IL. You can start planning to

attend, and if you have family

or friends in those areas, we

will have a youth bridge game

there also. Please encourage all

youth to learn and play bridge,

so they will be more

comfortable coming out and

meeting new friends and

playing our beloved game.

We also need sponsors and

chaperones for the youth.

Start now identifying funding

sources for our youth to attend

those and other bridge games.

We all can contribute to

insuring the future of Duplicate

Bridge in our community.

W.E.B. Debos Summer camp.

White House Tour

Our tour request was denied

based on the over whelming

popularity of this tour.

Nevertheless, we were still

disappointed, but must be

objective about the multitude of

groups that are denied each

year.

ACBL Youth Bridge Camp

Several ABA members have

assisted with this camp for the

past two years, making this a

joint effort to perpetuate bridge

in the Memphis area.

been president of the

Riverview Duplicate

Bridge Club since 2008 and a

member of this club since it

became a Chartered

membership of ABA in October

1993. Mrs. Maxine Garcia was

teaching a group of new bridge

players, and Riverview Bridge

Club was an outgrowth of that

group. Meanwhile, Lee and

Henreyne Meeks opened their

home for our continued

learning. Under Mrs. Garcia’s

and the Meeks’ great leadership

and guidance, Riverview Bridge

Club became a viable part of the

bridge world in Memphis, TN.

The rest, you can imagine that

under the auspices of Maxine

Garcia, our teacher, and the

hard work, dedication and

perseverance of our members,

bridge grew and is still alive in

our city today. Our group

attempts to let everyone know

that Riverview Bridge Club is

here to preserve its legacy and

to ensure the future of ABA in

the Southern Section.

The officers and members of

the club are encouraged to

follow the lead of the founding

members and to remember that

the key to success is improving

your game through bridge

education.

Speaking of Bridge Education

For those of us who read the

Daily Bridge Club in the

newspaper everyday, might

have found this to be one of the

strangest bids. I know that I

and several others did.

In the past 30 yrs., bidding

philosophy has evolved.

Because accuracy in

constructive bidding has

improved, players are more

focused on disrupting their

opponents’ auctions. I fear that

today’s deal, from the 2016

Vanderbilt, typifies what top-

level bridge has become.

East’s bid of 2 diamonds

conventionally showed a weak

two-bid in one of the major

suits. (If this hand had been any

weaker, it would have been

paralyzed.) When south

doubled, west judged to

mention his diamonds. He was

in minus 1100 territory at 3

diamonds doubled.

I met and played bridge on

Saturday with Ms. Linda Dunn,

ACBL attorney, who is a native

Memphian. It was a delight to

meet and play with her.
