Take time to visit the ACC Spa, located on the 3rd Floor just off the elevators. Experience a variety of massage services in a serene
setting.
Gift certificates available!
Please visit Jen Rankin, Spa Director, or stop by
the Executive Office (both on the 3rd Floor) to purchase gift certificates for massage services at
the ACC.
Like clockwork, the cold weather brings the swell of our indoor sport leagues, fitness classes and dining rooms. An added element to the season that can't go unnoticed are the renovation projects. Barring the obvious inconveniences involving fencing, jackhammers and sawing, we're thrilled to be taking demonstrative steps in the spirit of active stewardship of the clubhouse facility. Outside of the major renovations, the Club staff is excited about the stream of facelifts, programming, added services and projects that you will continue to see over time throughout the clubhouse.
The ACC Spa has now been up and running for two months and we're pleased to report that it has been active and growing. Spa Director Jen Rankin has been doing a fantastic job of navigating the development of this new center. Jen has been collecting your comments and feedback regarding potential additional services. We're very fortunate to have such a motivated and experienced Spa professional apply her years of experience to build our spa offerings. Already, in the first two months, we have seen an increase in (unique) member visits of 200%. The holidays are around the corner and, just in time, we’ve made Spa gift certificates available for purchase. Just call or visit Jen in her 3rd floor office immediately next to the Spa door.
For coffee fans, it's been a long wait. Ever since we announced in the spring that the club would be purchasing a 5 kilo coffee roaster and roasting our own coffee, the coffee fans have been asking with bated breath, "We roasting yet?" We've received our custom, American-made roaster from U.S. Roasters, out of Oklahoma. 750 lbs. of cast iron and steel, its painted ACC blue with chrome plates. After receiving the seal of approval from city inspectors, we scheduled the soonest possible visit from the manufacturer, which will take place in early November. In a matter of weeks, Athletic Club Roasting will be unveiled and begin crafting its way to being among the many things to savor as an ACC member.
Lastly, the ACC culinary team is already plotting the details for another spectacular turkey feast. Thanksgiving will be here in the blink of an eye, so don’t forget to make your reservations. See page 7 for details.
We hope to see you around the Club soon!

Giving TreeNovember 20 - December 11
Please place your unwrapped gifts
under the Giving Tree in the ACC Lobby.
The gifts will be delivered to the
Homeless Families Foundation this holiday season.
Presented by the Women’s Committee.
Those of you who have had a chance to visit the Club in the last several days have seen the fencing, construction equipment and the bricks and cement outside our building. This is the dust and mortar proof that the capital improvements to the ACC discussed for so long are really underway. The first step in our three year project is the removal of the long-standing planter boxes out front in order to complete the sidewalk improvement project. When the Club was built in 1915, it was completed with a vault feature that we still have today. We are trying to preserve the integrity of the Club while dealing with some of the challenges of keeping a 100 year old building vital.
Around the three sides of our Club, the basement footprint runs beyond the building walls and under our surrounding sidewalks. While it’s an entertaining thought that our bowling alley pinsetters are placed under the Broad Street sidewalk and that Lane 6 of the bowling alley is under Lazelle street sidewalk, that placement puts our assets in a potentially wet spot. Over a number of years, we have had water leakage into the vault area. Our current project will correct the issue and keep our basement, and bowling lounge, dry for the next 40 years or so.
As of the writing of this letter, the Lazelle work has gone very well and is nearly complete. We are now on to the Broad Street phase, which brings the added complexity of closing our main entrance and relocating it, along with the front desk operation, to the Library. While we regret the inconvenience this may cause, we hope you will agree that these current projects are of critical importance for the club.
The next step in our capital improvement projects is the renovation of the lower level public area and bowling lounge, which will commence in November. To pay homage to the Athletic Club’s first President, Henry Booth, the Board of Directors has named the new bowling alley and lounge “The
Booth.” Booth was among the visionaries that had the foresight to see a club like the ACC as an enduring part of the downtown Columbus landscape.
It’s an exciting time to be a part of the ACC. The upgrades and renovations which your dues money is funding will make our Club a better, more vital place to which to belong for many years. These improvements are the beginning of the ongoing work that has been the hope of many members for so long. Happily, the improvements that you are seeing are just the beginning of a process which will continue for the next three years. The best thing you can do as a member of the Club is to take full advantage of all the possibilities your membership provides. Get involved with a “Club within the Club”, attend one of the many special dinners on tap for the holiday, take advantage of our new spa facilities, participate in a new exercise class, or just come in and hang out. And most of all, tell your friends and family what a special place our Club is. New members are the lifeblood of our Club, and what a great time to join!
Best wishes for the holiday season, and we’ll see you around the Club!
From time to time, life brings changes that affect our financial picture: new jobs, promotions, retirement, births, deaths, marriage or divorce, etc. Such life changes make it necessary for us to periodically review our financial plans to determine if they are still working toward our current and future goals.

New Year, New Faces
The Club’s fiscal year began on September 1, as did the memberships of many new members at
the ACC. With over 50 new members joining us in August and September alone, the new fiscal year is
off to a great start.
A special thank you to our sponsors who continue to promote and support the Club month after
month! Remember, as a small token of our gratitude, all sponsors receive a $100 ACC Gift
Card when the new member is approved.
We look forward to welcoming your friends and family to the ACC this year. From attending
upcoming events or simply enjoying cocktails in Carmichael’s, your guests are always welcome to
experience the Club with you. See you at the Club!

FACES OF THE ACC“The Athletic Club is exclusive, but welcoming. I’ve made a lot of good friends here, and the staff always makes me feel comfortable.” – Tamara Turkenton
Realizing the value of networking in her position as Chief of Accounting and Electricity for the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), Tamara joined the ACC in 2008. She started with the PUCO in 1994 as a Rate Analyst and quietly worked her way up to the position she holds today. She interacts routinely with AEP, Columbia Gas, First Energy, Duke Energy and other gas and electric suppliers.
In her work, she travels to other countries such as India and the Ukraine and assists them with their rate-setting and accounting policies and practices. _________________________________________________
ACC: How often are you at the Club?Tamara: Several times a week. But I feel like I should be here more often, especially at night. I think that I can take better advantage of all the Club has to offer. I joined mostly for athletic and business reasons, but there’s a whole social side that I could tap into.
ACC: You eat here fairly often, right?Tamara: Yes, but not as much as I should be. I think that the food here is very good and very reasonably priced. It’s a bit of a hidden gem. Plus, I am not really a part of the “bar scene,” and coming to the Club is a great alternative. It’s nice and comfortable and people are super friendly. It’s easy to strike up a conversation, and the staff takes such good care of all the members.
ACC: What kind of athletic activities interest you?Tamara: Well, I’m an avid runner. I just finished my first marathon. I also like the spinning classes, and I’ve enjoyed some of the newer cardio classes like TRX, Yoga and Warriors Workout. I’ve also taken part in several of the special programs like “I lost it at the Club” and “Stay even for the Season.” Blair (Assistant Athletic Director Blair Visser) has really done a great job providing fitness programs to help us achieve and maintain fitness goals.
ACC: And, you’re on a Committee, too?Tamara: Yes. I am on the Admissions Committee. We meet once a month to review new member applications.
ACC: So you work-out here, you dine here, you’re on a committee here…and you still think that you should be more involved?Tamara: (Laughing) I guess that does sound strange! I mean that I don’t attend a lot of the evening and social events, and I’d like to.
ACC: What are some changes that you have witnessed during your membership?Tamara: Lots of changes. That’s what makes the Club great…its adaptability. The fitness programming is always evolving, and the demographics are changing in a positive way. There are a lot of new women members, and young families, and that’s refreshing. I’ve also recently started attending the new spa located on the 3rd floor. Massages by Jen Rankin helped me tremendously during my marathon training. The spa facility was a great addition to the Club. ACC: What would you say to someone who is considering membership at the ACC?Tamara: There is so much here, and it’s different than joining a “Lifetime Fitness.” There is more personal interaction, lots of opportunities to network, both business-wise and socially, and you are always made to feel welcome. You will meet people with like interests, and they’ll end up being good friends, but you have to step up and join in!
ACC: Any surprises for new members?Tamara: I think a great surprise is the reciprocal Club agreements. I’ve used Clubs in several different cities on my personal travels, and it’s always nice to be treated like a member. These partnerships are a great amenity, and it makes you feel welcome even in another city.
“Blair’s programming has been a great addition to my workouts. She is really dedicated to helping us all reach our fitness goals.”- Tamara Turkenton
