***Acceptable file formats: SafeAssign accepts files in Microsoft Word (doc and docx)/
OpenOffice (odt)/ TXT / RTF / HTML / PDF formats only.
*** Important note about drafts – If you are going to use the draft option you actually have to
create two separate Safe Assignments because students can only submit one assignment and if they
submit a draft they will not be able to submit the final paper using the same Safe Assignment. You
have to create a separate draft Safe Assignment with no point value, unless you are going to grade it
and then create a separate Safe Assignment for the graded paper.
click the SafeAssign link.
You can open them on your computer, read and grade them. Then you can go back to the Blackboard
Grade Center to enter the grades just like you enter other grades in the columns. Click once to put the
cursor in the field where you see the exclamation mark and just type in the grade and press “Enter” on the
keyboard to save the grade and go to the next student and repeat the process. If you need to enter any
feedback or comments you can click the down pointing arrow icon to the right of the exclamation mark
and choose “Add Comment.”
Type your comments or feedback to the student in the “Feedback to User” box, which can be resized using
the small arrows at the right and at the bottom. There is also a “Grading Notes” section where the
instructor can enter notes which the student will not see.
The student will be able to see the feedback you enter by going to their My Grades. There is also another
way that you can enter comments. This method also allows you to attach a file, such as the student’s
original paper. To use this method you choose “Grade Detail” instead of “Add Comment” as you did
above. On the Grade Details screen you click “View Attempt.”
On the next screen you can enter comments and attach a file, but the students will not be able to view
them in the My Grades section of Blackboard. They will have to go back to the original Safe Assignment
submission link and click View/Complete again. They will get a message that says that they have already
submitted the assignment and they should click OK to view the grade. This will allow them to see the
comments and the attached file.
*** Quick Submit is now called Direct Submit
Click the “Submit A Paper” link.
You can submit individual papers by clicking the Browse button and locating the file. Acceptable file
formats include: .zip, .doc, .docx, .odt, .txt, .rtf, and .html. You can also copy and paste the text of a paper.
A batch of papers can be submitted as a .zip file. The option to “Submit as a draft” does not add the paper
to the institutional search database. The “Skip Plagiarism Checking” option only adds the paper to the
institutional search database.
