1 Introduction
1.1 Background:
Kennscott Limited is a customer driven company managed by a cadre of
highly skilled technical workers within the catering sector. They provide
catering and ship chandelling services for many companies within the energy
sector of Trinidad and Tobago. A relatively new player in our countrys
thriving energy sector! K"##S$%TT Ltd became fully operational in &une
'(()! and has already made its mark as a dependable! ethical! e*cient and
professional business enterprise partner to several leading energy
companies! both locally and internationally.
1.2 Project research problem
+oor management of inventory items at Kennscott leads to stock out and
rush cost associated with procuring items at late intervals for the
re,uirements of events and re,uest made via o-shore installations. This is
costly in resourcing as well as detrimental to customer satisfaction andcustomer retention.
%verstocking of items such as perishable impact negatively as too much
nance is invested in these inventory items! as well as items held to long
becomes spoilt and have to be dumped and then re/ordered when needed
adding to costs. +oor storage which causes deterioration of perishable items
such as meats! fruits and vegetable! storage is of vital importance as
managing inventories as holding stock is costly.
Kennscotts operations is driven based on events management! o-shore
installations catering and ship/chandelling services! therefore if the

re,uirements increase due to demands of client services! back orders would
be increased since the appropriation of the current inventory system is not
demand driven! therefore Kennscott Limited is faced with unsatised clients.
%rganisations therefore are e0ploring ways toward postponement strategy in
response to constantly changing demands 12ang '((34. 5raman and
Maga6ine 1'((74 argued that today! the cost of holding inventory! e0tensive
product proliferation and the risk of obsolescence! especially in rapidly
changing markets! make the e0pense of holding large inventories of nished
goods e0cessive and that high demand items naturally have safety stock
assigned to them! Therefore! inventory management strategies play an
important role especially in the catering8ship chandelling business that is
being studied.
2.0 Focus of the tud!
2.1 Purpose of research project
Stocks or reserves are critical in carry out day to day operations for
companies! it is essential that they grasp two essential are most relevant
aspects when analysis of a systematic and strategic approach is to be
implemented! these are

of the "%= model. This classical economic production ,uantity model 1"+=4
has been widely used and would be instrumental in strategic formulation for
Kennscott Limited.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the e0isting inventory
management system at Kennscott? to determine the factors contributing to
its ine-ectiveness and to make recommendations towards enhancing the
system.
Key areas of investigation will be@
• An analysis and evaluation of the inventory management challengesKennscott is facing.
• Assessing the +erformance of the present inventory management
systems and the impact on the operational obectives of Kennscott
Limited.• Identify the aspects of the inventory management systems in need of
improving.• Betermination of the most appropriate inventory management system
based on Kennscott Limited operations re,uirements.
2.2 "esearch #uestions
In order to achieve the obectives! this research will be designed to answer
the following research ,uestions@
9. <hat is the nature of the current inventory management system at
Kennscott Limited;
'. <hat are the challenges e0perienced by in managing of the Inventory
Management System at Kennscott Limited;

C. :ow is the performance of the Inventory Management System impacting
on the operations performance obectives of Kennscott Limited;
3. <hat aspects of the inventory management system are in need of
improvement;
D. <hat strategic interventions can be implemented to enhance the
performance of the inventory management system;
2.$ igni%cance of the research
The main purpose of this proect is to provide insight on new innovative
solution for managing inventory at Kennscott. The results of this research will
assist in identifying the main contributors to the poor performance of thepresent inventory management system at Kennscott and more importantly
make strategic recommendations towards the design of a more appropriate
and cost e-ective inventory management system for Kennscott. In so doing
not only will the protability of the company increase but more importantly
client satisfaction will be enhanced adding to the overall competitiveness of
the organisation.

demand/pull production. This concept involves the
use of demand for a given product to signal when
production should occur. The use of demand/pull

Betermination of the order point is based on three
factors@
Nsage O Nsage refers to the ,uantity of inventory used
or sold each day
Lead Time O The lead time for an order is the time in
days it takes from the placement of an order to when
the goods arrive or are produced. Many times
companies can proect a constant! average gure for
both usage and lead time
Safety Stock O The ,uantity of inventory kept on hand
by a company in the event of uctuating usage or
unusual delays in lead time is called safety stock.

Bata will be analysed both inductively and deductively! in that from a
deductive or top down approach information resourcing will be
assimilated from the theory of the topic! then to an approach to assess
the hypothesis then we evaluate through observation which then leads
to an assessment or test to the hypothesis through specic data.
Beductive will allow a di-erent grasp or reasoning through rstly
observation which then forms correlations or pattern that would be
developed through observing which then forms the hypothesis based on
measures and controls that can be e0plored! then the researcher can
develop a generali6e conclusion based on the theory.
8 /thical considerations
An agreement was made between researcher and the company being
studied that all information that is resourced would be held with thehighest ethical consideration as followed based on ethical clause and
guidelines provided by the Australian Institute of Eusiness.
As agreed via written re,uest each individual interview would be treated with
respect and allowed to present information based on the parameters of
this research therefore no irrelevant ,uestioning that could initiate bios to
this research would be asked.
