Learning ObjectivesLearning Objectives

Part III – Documentation and “Taking the Model to the Field” covers:

• Meeting Minutes

• Signed Off Drawings & Models

• Navisworks Freedom Viewer

• Tekla BIMsight

• Sequencing of Trades

• Onsite Implementation

Meeting MinutesMeeting Minutes

• The most important meeting is the BIM Kickoff Meeting

• Communicate & Demonstrate Meeting Agenda

• Commit to meeting format & don’t deviate

• Standardize format and be consistent as a company

• Be willing to adjust, not all projects are the same

Meeting MinutesMeeting Minutes

Signed Off Drawings & ModelsSigned Off Drawings & Models

• File Naming, File naming, File naming

• Use Standards – Owner driven if applicable

– No Owner Standards – Use Industry Standards

• Federated Model names and individual file names should be consistent

• Clearly communicate file format expectations – Clash Detection - .dwg

– Submittal for A/E Review - .pdf or .dwf

– Construction Documents - .pdf or .dwf

– Electronic Sign Off - .dwf

• Need to think of the end to get the beginning right – Build file format and structure the way you intend to hand off to owner

– Might require meetings with facilities staff to setup properly

Signed Off Drawings & ModelsSigned Off Drawings & Models

Freedom Viewer & Freedom Viewer & BIMSightBIMSight

• Navisworks Freedom Viewer – **Free** viewer for easy opening of .NWD and 3D DWF files

– Enables viewing of model hierarchy, object properties and embedded review data, including viewpoints, animations, redlines, and comments

– Includes full set of navigation tools: Walk; Look Around; Zoom; Zoom Box; Pan; Orbit; Examine; Fly; Turntable

– Supports real-time display of materials and lighting

• Tekla BIMSight – Combine Multiple Models and file formats from a variety of BIM Software

– Check clashes, manage clashes, approve comments & assign responsibility

– Measure distance in the model

– Control visualization and transparency of different components of a model

– Query properties of model components

Sequencing of TradesSequencing of Trades

• Easy tool to learn and the price is right - $free – Very minimal training required

• Bring Free Viewer of coordinated space into progress meetings – Can be Field Foreman, or CAD Department until Field staff has training

• Site Superintendents and MEP Foreman will use the model

• Picture is worth a thousand words

• One week and two week look ahead planning

• Less congestion and potentially less manpower

• It is clear who needs to be where first, second, third etc.

• Promotes Collaboration amongst field staff – Consider “BIM Box” (Digital Gangbox)

• With more collaboration, you get quicker acceptance

Onsite ImplementationOnsite Implementation

• Pick a “pilot” project

• Identify a “pilot” Foreman

• Start with the Blocking & Tackling – Do not need to leverage all the possibilities on the maiden voyage

• Provide the Foundation

• Users will develop the rest

• Setup a platform for support and feedback – Use a tool Field Foreman is already comfortable with

• daily log

• look ahead forms

• Keep a software specialist engaged with Field staff – Usually CAD Supervisor or Senior Detailer

• There is up front expense

• ROI is rapid with successful implementation
