A MEMBER “TRIs” SOMETHING NEW AND FINDS SUCCESS
If you often start your day with a
workout at the Sports Center, perhaps you
have seen them: triathletes tearing around
the club’s ¼-mile track at 6:00am, making
waves in the 25-yard pool, or carefully
wheeling high-tech bikes through the
parking lot. These are the members of the
Full Throttle racing team and they descend
on the Sports Center at 5:30am five days
a week to train in the three disciplines
that comprise a triathlon. While the
intensity of this team might translate into
an intimidating prospect for some, one
member proves that with equal doses of
motivation and enthusiasm, anyone can
proudly don the red, blue and yellow Full
Throttle racing singlet.
As 2012 came to a close, Steve
Borne crept past the 250 pound mark,
was being treated for high blood pressure
and felt generally uncomfortable doing
most activities — even walking
up stairs was difficult. So,
Steve set a New Year’s
resolution to start training
for and competing in triathlons, a sport he
had dabbled in during his early 20s, when
an Internet search brought him to the
Sports Center. Despite a number of years
of inactivity, Steve literally jumped feet first
into his Sports Center triathlon training
endeavor. He became a member of the
club on January 2, 2013 and joined the
highly decorated Full Throttle Endurance
Racing Team later that same week.
When Steve showed up for the first day
of training, head coach Scott Berlinger
admits he thought the newbie might have
been lost. However; his initial surprise
faded quickly when Steve’s immediate
hard work and dedication proved that he
was in the right place. In fact, Steve did not
miss a single day of workouts for seven
months, resulting in the loss of 63 pounds.
“A triumph of consistency,” as Steve
calls it, which was made possible by the
inspirational and high-level coaching he
received from Scott Berlinger along with
the support and camaraderie of his fellow
teammates. “I could not have gone through
the transformation I did working on my
own,” concludes Steve, “and not for lack of

THE WAY WE WEREFirst opened in 1910, the Chelsea Piers are the last
survivors of a once grand row of nine ocean liner piers — a frequent port of call for the great ships that sailed during the heyday of transatlantic voyages.
Walk along Sunset Strip and view the historic photomurals that depict some of the high points of Chelsea Piers’ early history. Witness the anxious crowds awaiting the arrival of the Titanic survivors after the great ship sank on April 15, 1912, during her maiden voyage while en route to Chelsea Piers. Catch a glimpse of the 1936 U.S. Olympic team that sailed to the Berlin Games from Chelsea Piers, and see Jesse Owens’ triumphant return with his four gold medals.
After serving as a base for warships during both World Wars, changing transportation trends in the 1960s brought Chelsea Piers’ shipping days to an end. In 1994, Chelsea Piers was reborn when con-struction began on the restoration and revitalization of the Piers and surrounding waterfront. Today, as a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment complex, the Piers provide a vibrant environment, showcasing both historic architecture and the waterfront’s adaptability to New York City’s changing needs.
YEAR-ROUND SPORTS VILLAGEChelsea Piers is a place where anyone with a
few hours to spare can enjoy healthy, fun-filled rec-reation. Five different athletic facilities — the Field House, Sky Rink, the Sports Center health club, the Golf Club and Bowlmor Chelsea Piers — offer an unrivaled combination of sports and entertainment.
Join one of the many youth or adult league teams that compete regularly in basketball, soccer, golf and ice hockey, or take classes in a wide variety of sports. Chelsea Piers also boasts New York City’s ultimate health club — the Sports Center — which is located at Pier 60. Here, you’ll find more equipment, group fitness classes, personal trainers and training programs than any other club in Manhattan.
If you’re a kid, Chelsea Piers is a dream come true. Take classes in more than 27 different sports, or reserve your place in one of our popular sum-mer or school break sports camps. From preschool programs and child care to birthday parties, school field trips and project gradua-tions, Chelsea Piers has something for children of all ages.

Chelsea Piers is for everyone — adults and kids, committed athletes and those learning a sport for the first time. Membership is not required and all the equipment you need is right here.
Chelsea Piers opened to rave reviews in 1995, and the excitement hasn’t stopped since. The M14-D, which crosses Manhattan on 14th Street, terminates at 18th Street and the West Side Highway across the street from Pier 59.
PEDESTRIAN ACCESSTraffic lights and crosswalks guide pedestri-
ans, skaters and cyclists across the highway to Chelsea Piers’ entrances at 22nd Street, 20th Street and 18th Street at the West Side Highway. A one-mile public esplanade extends around the perimeter of Chelsea Piers and an interior walkway, Sunset Strip, connects the facilities. The Hudson River Park bikeway/walkway runs parallel and through Chelsea Piers, making the Piers an ideal destination for bikers, joggers and walkers. Bike racks are available.

NEED A PLACE TO PLAY?www.chelseapiers.com
Chelsea Piers is for everyone — adults and kids, committed athletes and those learning a sport for the first time. Membership is not required, and all the equipment you need is right here.
Chelsea Piers opened to rave reviews in 1995, and the excitement hasn’t stopped since. One of the City’s top attractions, this amazing riverside sports and entertainment complex sits in the heart of the Hudson River Park, New York City’s expanse of public green space. With the Hudson River to the west and the Hudson River Park bikeway/walkway and The High Line to the east, Chelsea Piers attracts residents and visitors alike, day and night, year-round.
“Like Google, Chelsea Piers established itself as a basic necessity almost as soon as it appeared on the scene. It’s hard to remember NYC without it.”

“With each stop, the final destination of the M23 bus became clearer. Some passengers got on with golf clubs, others with hockey sticks, a few with bowling balls. We were trundling to Chelsea Piers, the once-crumbling Hudson River docks that in 1995 opened as a self-proclaimed athletic paradise.”
