Today’s workshop

• Setting the scene• Your ideas• Emerging themes• Developing proposals• Sharing proposals

@AESLTP #ESLTP

Setting the sceneWHAT the plans is and WHY we are all doing this:

Watch the introduction videohttp://vimeo.com/87967836

Your ideas

• What are your top ideas for strengthening ecosystem science in Australia over the next 20 years or longer?

Emerging themes

What are the themes emerging from prior town halls and the survey?

Watch the emerging themes video:http://vimeo.com/87967658

Developing proposals• Find a theme that interests you• Groups of no more than 5 people• Your task– Clarify or refine the idea(s) or problem– Come up with concrete proposals, define outcome first– More than one proposal and individual proposals ok

• Notes and proposal details in Word template• Key points for reporting in Powerpoint template

• At the end of breakout time:– Share key points with whole of group – opportunity for

questions/clarification– Getting sense of agreement with proposals

Two templates

• First template: Word document to capture proposal details

• Second template: Powerpoint for key points to report

Template 1: discussion and details

Title:Outcome:

Actions needed:

Who:Next steps:

Template 2: key points for reporting

Title: Ecosystem Science ActOutcome: Legislation that obliges society to collect fundamental ecosystem information

Actions needed: Mount the case that government (at all levels) and industry have an obligation to collect ecosystem science data in perpetuity.

Who: Peak body of ecosystem science works with policy-makers

Next steps: Awareness campaign of need for Act

Example proposal 1:

Title: Re-connecting with ecosystemsOutcome: Re-establish awareness of the social-ecological-systems that we are all embedded within (where does our food come from, where does our waste go?)

Actions needed: •Embrace complexity (teach complex systems science => resilience way of thinking) •reinvigorate hands-on teaching/ practical skills in current generation/ generations to come•Promoting citizen science initiatives (once education/ ownership established) to fill monitoring gaps (& provide 2-way feedback b/w scientists-citizens)Who: School level; community/ industry groups/ up-skilled scientistsWhen: Now (before practical ecological knowledge/ skills of observation

are lost!)Next steps: Engage with educators/ identify ecosystem science champions, eco-celebrity

Example proposal 2:

Break out groups

Sharing proposals

Sense of agreement

Not high priority / not useful

Maybe / have some reservations

High priority / useful

Submit proposals

Submit your proposals (both Word and Powerpoint files) here:

group for consideration as part of Plan• Synthesis of future directions and compilation

of plan in April/May. Followed by review and release mid-2014
