Piling stacks of content onto your slides and expecting your audience to pay attention is delusional. People will tune out.

Break up your text. People have a hard time remembering several points thrown at them at once. You need to rehearse well enough so you can give all your attention to the audience. It’s not enough to read the notes or your script over and over again until you’ve got it down. It’s much better to practice the presentation the way you’ll deliver it: in “real-world” way. Here are some tips to prepare to give a presentation.

Practice out loud. Say the presentation out loud; three to six times should do it.

Practice with variety. Every time you say your presentation, say it differently – the goal is to keep it conversational, not memorize exact phrases.

Be aware of timing. Leave time in your practice session for audience interaction, questions, etc.

World class presentations require time and focus. Below are some average timeframes and steps for an hour-long presentation that has 30 slides. 6-20 hours: research and collect input from the web, colleagues and the industry 1 hour: Think about your audience. What are they like? Why are they here? What keeps them up at night? And most importantly, what do you need them to think, feel, do as a result of hearing your presentation? 2 hours: Generate ideas. A great brainstorming method is using sticky notes and a sharpie. (HOLD UP STICKY NOTES AND SHARPIE) One idea per sticky note. If it takes more space than a sticky note and requires more detail, your idea is probably too complex. 1 hour: Once you’ve captured your ideas, sort and rearrange them as needed. Sticky notes also make it easy to re-order your ideas until the flow feels right. 1 hour: Get feedback – Have a colleague critique or collaborate around the impact your ideas will have on your audience. 2 hours: Storyboard your presentation 20-60 hours: Build the slides in PowerPoint 3 hours: Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse (in the shower, on the treadmill, during your commute) We know you always don’t have that much time, but keep in mind that great presentations take time, and you want to allow yourself the time you need to make your presentation great.
