1

Close your eyes and imagine yourself in sitting in an audience, maybe in a room just like this. The speaker takes her place. Applause! Anticipation! She fiddles around with the computer and then... the first slide! Oh, no, bullet points! Text, text and more text follows as the presenter drones on. Bored to tears, you (and everyone else around you) begin to slide out your phone and check Facebook. Open your eyes… So has this ever happened to you? (Raise your hand). Yes?

Death by power point, know it, seen it and most likely done it. Beautiful images help people to remember what you are talking about at the time. You can add to the memorability of your presentation by having compelling images that go along with what you are currently talking about.

20

Flat design. This is artwork with a clean, simple look. It’s growing in popularity for presentations because it’s used so much in web and mobile applications. Can anyone guess which company is driving this design trend? Yes, Apple. Take a look at the icons on your phone – those are flat design.

21

Edge-to-edge photos are impactful visuals

22

And they make your message more powerful.

23

When it comes to Text – Less is more!

24

What is a striking image that you’ve seen in the news in the last 24 hours?

25

Same slide but with visuals

26

Recognize this? 1. Multiple paragraphs 2. Presenter reading from the slides 3. Used presentations as a comprehensive document Bullet points can be the death of a presentation. Piling stacks of content onto your slides and expecting your audience to pay attention is delusional. People will tune out.

27

Instead fill the screen with a single, engaging photo, text or graphic that illustrates your point.

28

Studies show that participants remember more when they focus on the presenter and not the content on the slides.

29

Break up your text. People have a hard time remembering several points thrown at them at once. Break things down into individual slides and offer details in a handout: maybe a white paper or infographic. Another idea is to have two versions of your presentation – one that you use as the background for your speech, and one with added detail or with your speaker notes. If you absolutely need to have bullet points, a good rule of thumb is 3-5 points per slide.

30

Volunteers – timer on cell phone – one person times me – read verbatim as loud as I can, everyone in the audience reads it silently. First person done, raise their hand and second person finishes reading. What did you do when you were done reading? You will remember 10 percent if it’s text, 65 percent if it’s images

31

The human brain has a lot of difficulty listening to someone speak and reading something different at the same time. And reading exactly what is on your slide is just going to bore your audience. TYPO! Who caught the typo? Demonstration of not reading from your slides

32

Iowa is the largest producer of pork, corn and eggs in the nation. It is not surprising that Iowa is the number one producer of pork and corn, but Iowa is also the largest producer of eggs and ethanol, as well as wind energy.

37

I’ve seen many graphs or visuals that you can’t read and don’t have any trend lines to make it a key point to present. If you are going to tell a story about data, make it relevant. If nothing is different why put it up there? If there is an outlier, talk about it In Iowa, hogs outnumber people 4 to 1. With 3 million people in the state, that means Iowa is home to around 12 million hogs.

Diving with a humpback whale and her newborn calf while they cruise around Roca Partida … in Mexico. This is an outstanding and unique place full of pelagic life, so we need to accelerate the incorporation of the islands into UNESCO as [a] natural heritage site in order to increase the protection of the islands against the prevailing illegal fishing corporations and big-game fishing.

Speed of sound is just north of 700 mph, and sound waves are ahead of the plane until is creates a sonic boom and overtakes the waves A cone of water vapor surrounds an F/A-18F Super Hornet airplane as it approaches the sound barrier during the New York Air Show at Jones Beach State Park. Rings like this can form as an aircraft traveling low over the water nears the speed of sound. Pressure created by sound waves squeezes moisture from the air, creating the "artificial cloud.

Do a photo contrast of multiple photos, add this in. Tip and key takeaway: use high res photos!

1. Content •Give the facts they need, don’t overload – don’t fill with irrelevant things •Talk about the why and not just the how •Balance what you say with what your presentation delivers •More focus less scatter – 3 x 5 card message, know your message – if you can’t put it on here, then you have too much info •No bullet points and why – the minute people see bullet points, scientific studies say people feel the need to take notes, we can’t do multiple things well at once •Ask ?’s and engage your audience •Tony Bradley story – auto mechanic scared of public speaking, dressed up at a networking event and told his why, so genuine, if I can’t tell my family about it at night, then it was the wrong thing to do, show up as you feel comfortable representing what you do

In 2004, researchers at Washington State University studied 210 fonts to find out how people felt toward them. And they came up with 6 categories of fonts, which can generally be sorted based on whether the font was more informal or more forceful and what emotional impact it had, from no impact to unsettling. Funeral home example: what kind of font should they use? Probably not the STENCIL or the Snap ITC.

48

Less “I’ll wing it” A presentation should always be about the audience – make it relevant to the audience Be real! Steve Jobs made fun of himself to being just like you and me during his Stanford speech Power of the pause Eye contact – be genuine

49

You need to rehearse well enough so you can give all your attention to the audience. It’s not enough to read the notes or your script over and over again until you’ve got it down. It’s much better to practice the presentation the way you’ll deliver it: in “real-world” way. Here are some tips to prepare to give a presentation.

50

Practice out loud. Say the presentation out loud; three to six times should do it.

51

Practice with variety. Every time you say your presentation, say it differently – the goal is to keep it conversational, not memorize exact phrases.

52

Be aware of timing. Leave time in your practice session for audience interaction, questions, etc.

53

Practice in front of a real audience, similar to your target audience. Practice in front of people who are similar to the “real audience.” If there are words that you are using they don’t understand, or concepts that aren’t clear, it’s better to find out in front of your practice audience, rather than the “real audience.”

54

Incorporate spontaneous Q&A into your practice. If you anticipate getting questions, or being interrupted during the presentation, make sure your practice audience is doing the same.

55

Spend more time on the speech opening and closing. Practice your opening and close more frequently – commute time is great for this.

56

Practice by recording yourself. If they are very critical presentations, videotape yourself.

57

World class presentations require time and focus. Below are some average timeframes and steps for an hour-long presentation that has 30 slides. 6-20 hours: research and collect input from the web, colleagues and the industry 1 hour: Think about your audience. What are they like? Why are they here? What keeps them up at night? And most importantly, what do you need them to think, feel, do as a result of hearing your presentation? 2 hours: Generate ideas. A great brainstorming method is using sticky notes and a sharpie. (HOLD UP STICKY NOTES AND SHARPIE) One idea per sticky note. If it takes more space than a sticky note and requires more detail, your idea is probably too complex. 1 hour: Once you’ve captured your ideas, sort and rearrange them as needed. Sticky notes also make it easy to re-order your ideas until the flow feels right. 1 hour: Get feedback – Have a colleague critique or collaborate around the impact your ideas will have on your audience. 2 hours: Storyboard your presentation 20-60 hours: Build the slides in PowerPoint 3 hours: Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse (in the shower, on the treadmill, during your commute) We know you always don’t have that much time, but keep in mind that great presentations take time, and you want to allow yourself the time you need to make your presentation great.

58

What happens if your technology fails? What do you do if the screen goes black? Will the laptop be where you can see the notes? What is the setup? Speaker for video?? Be prepared. Practice – why I’ve seen speakers have technology issues, and they just kept going like nothing happened because they practiced. Gain your audience’s attention and figure out how to keep it. Is everyone on their phone? They probably aren’t tweeting all your speech nuggets…keep them engaged! Gestures – metal bucket, bolts, ah or um, drop the bolt in the bucket, irritates and interrupts

59

1. Gesture issues

2. Gestures exude confidence to your audience

3. Use them sparingly and purposefully Power sphere eyes, belly button Keep your gestures within the power sphere. Picture your power sphere as a circle that runs from the top of your eyes, out to the tips of your outstretched hands, down to your belly button, and back up to your eyes again. Try to keep your gestures and eye gaze in this zone. Hands that hang below your navel lack energy and “confidence.” Using complex gestures above the waist will give the audience a sense of confidence about you as a leader, help you communicate your thoughts more effortlessly, and enhance your overall presence.

Bad habit breakers Talk with hands – on podium, hold a pen or a string Ahh and umm breakers Bill Clinton holds his finger under his thumb – think about ways you can correct it and practice the corrections before your public speaking engagement.
