DO NOW: WHAT DOES SLOPE MEAN? HOW DO WE FIND IT?

New Unit! Yay! ^_^

WHAT IS SLOPE?

The word slope (gradient, incline, pitch) is used to describe the measurement of the steepness of a straight line.

The letter in math used for slope is m. You can think of it as the move.

SLOPE FORMULA

(x, y) (x, y)Slope = =

TO FIND THE SLOPE OF A LINE

1.Select any two points on the line.

2. Find the vertical change (rise).

3.Find the horizontal change (run).

4.Write the ratio of the rise to the run.

You can also check by counting the lines!~

LET’S FIND THE SLOPE.

What do you notice about the lines and their slopes?

POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, ZERO AND UNDEFINED SLOPE

Positive slope

As points move from left to right along a line that is rising, y increases and x increases and the slope of the line is positive.

NEGATIVE SLOPE

As points move from left to right along a line that is falling, y decreases as x increases and the slope of the line is negative.

ZERO SLOPE

• If a line is parallel to the x-axis, its slope is zero.

• The equation is written as y=

UNDEFINED SLOPE

• If a line is parallel to the y-axis, it’s slope is undefined.

• The equation is written as x =
