DOES COLD AIR CONTRACT AND HOT AIR EXPAND?

Materials:

•Two containers with water (one with hot water

EXPERIMENT 1

•Two containers with water (one with hot waterand the other with cold water)

•one plastic bottle •one balloon.

Use a thermo to keep the water hot and ice cubs to cold the water as much as possible.

Procedure:

1. Take the balloon and stretch the neck of the balloon over the bottle top.

2. Put the bottle with the balloon at the top inside the container with hot water and observe.

3. Now, put the bottle with the balloon inside the container with the cold water.

Explain the experiment and your results.

DOES AIR TAKE UP SPACE?

Materials:

•a jar filled with water

EXPERIMENT 2

•a jar filled with water•some paper tissues•one glass •one ping-pong ball.

Procedure:

1. Take the ping-pong ball and leave it into the jar.

2. Then take the glass and push it from the top of the jar to the bottom ( be careful the ping-pong ball has to be inside the glass when you push it).

3. Observe, Is there water in the glass?3. Observe, Is there water in the glass?4. Now repeat the same procedure, but before to sink the glass put the tissues inside.

CAN AIR PRESSURE CRUSH A CAN?

Materials:

•Empty soda can

EXPERIMENT 3

•Empty soda can•Hot plate or stove•Cooking tongs•Gloves•Bowl•Cold water

Procedure:1. Fill the bowl with cold water (the colder the better).

2. Add one generous tablespoon of water to the empty soda 2. Add one generous tablespoon of water to the empty soda can (just enough to cover the bottom of the can).

3. Place the can on the burner of the stove while it is in the “OFF”position. It’s time for that adult to turn on the burner to heat the water. Soon you’ll hear the bubbling sound of the water boiling and you’ll see the water vapor rising from the can.

4. Continue heating the can for one more minute.

5. Put on your globes. Use the tongs to transfer the can into the bowl of water.

6. Invert the can and submerge
