Alcohol Consumption
www.worldmapper.org
Produced by the SASI group (Sheffield) and Mark Newman (Michigan)
“In South China, when a baby girl is born, her parents will brew alcohol for her, bury it underground and keepit until she marries.”
The average Western European drinksover a third more alcohol than theaverage person living in any otherregion. The lowest alcoholconsumption per person is found inSouthern Asia, where on averagepeople drink less than a third of theaverage consumption elsewhere.
In some territories there is practicallyno alcohol consumption. Many MiddleEastern and Northern Africanterritories are not visible on the mapfor that reason. In contrast, China, the United States and the RussianFederation have the largest areas onthe map, because the most alcohol isconsumed there by large populations.
• Data are from World Health Organization,2006,Behavioural and Risk Factor Indicators.
• *Alcoholic drinks are converted to litres of absolute alcohol.
• **No significant alcohol consumption rates werereported for 15 smaller territories.
• See website for further information.
Territory size shows the proportion of worldwide alcohol, adjusted for absolute alcohol content, that was drunkthere in 2001.
