ARCHITECTURE

Architecture is the equilibrium of art and science, in that sense it is, for me, the most pluridisciplinary field. It is an exercise that represents the ability to thouthfully combine and arrange knowledge off all sorts in sym-biotic manner in order to create various environments and experiences for the users and viewers.

This first year studio is composed of two main exercises. The first of which was to manipulate platonic solids; here a cuboc-tahedron. A series of ruled transformations and morphings were meant to alter its identity to a certain degree and make us familiar with the 3D dimensional world. Playing with the vertices, faces and the overal scale in order to change the reading of the geometric shapes. The small space project corresponds to the second exercise. It develops an anthropo-morphic study of the body to create a sin-

gle person habitable and functional space. The Volume is shaped by human activities such as lying down, sittting, stretching... Indeed occupancy volumes are created for each actions and organized spactially to define a form, its apertures and ground relationship.

The strategy for this single person liv-ing space was to have two functional leg masses that hug and push a third one upward. The elevated mass was used for sleeping and viewing viewing art while the two leg were occupied by more active programs: working and stretching. The entrance is located underneath the elevat-ed mass and between the structural legs for privacy. The underbelly and the middle volume is occupiable. The height limit of 16 feet did not permit two stories, the elevation differences are therefore half a floor.

The Los Angeles Center for Architecture (LACA) is an archive center meant to store and showcase all types of architec-tural artifacts and works of local Architects. It is a cultural building opened to the pub-lic located in downtown Los Angeles. Visitors are allowed to consult the archives by appointment only, the other spaces are more public. Program is composed of Exhibition Galleries, research and study spaces, cafe and bookstore and a large lecture hall.

The design process began with a prec-edent study (The Altes museum), after recreating the plan of the building through a system of of annotated regulating grids, a specific geometric area was chosen. The area was to be transformed into a 3 dimensional figure using primitive geome-tries only. The figure then went through a series of transformation and iterations, the final version was ogranised in space with its predecessors using of frames (sticks). The setup was then repeated and agre-gated in 3D to create a field condition.

A cut in that field was to be the basic morphology used to design the LACA form and plans.

This Studio began with a precedent study of public building, in my case, the S.O.S children’s village in Chicago, Illinois by Studio gang. A serie of massing/formal studies that were derived from cubes and that incorporate ideas and formal state-gies were developped. Program and site was thereafter implimented to our form in the idea of looking at form and program relationship and creating and proposal that answers the constraints of the site in question. The project of the 2B studio was a Boys

and Girls Club and our site is located in Hollywood, California, at the corner of Hol-lywood boulevard and Argyle street.A site analysis revealed an easily acces-sible site but a neighborhood not exactly suited for young ones. The assigned lot is a sloping one (north to south) and it is divided in two parcels by a 20 feet long alley that runs through it. 36 feet was our height limit and the Hollywood urbanistic rules (setbacks) were applied. The program brief was divided into interior and exterior prorams, respectively 30000

sq ft and 25000 ft.LIST OF PROGRAMS

The 2B studio (Current studio) is the program studio of the cursus. The assig-ment is a culinary school located at the corner of Olympic blvd and Main street in downtown Los Angeles. We were given a brief and had to develop our program list and requirements. We had to imagine and create the concept and ideology of the school. Here for were achieved through the manip-ulation of simple micro morphologies such as L shapes, bars and doughnuts in the 3D bounding box of the site.

Visual Studies - Fabrication and delineation

Visual studies seminars are what we call the little studios, they concentrate on construction methods and techniques of representation and description. The second semester looked at calibrating printer and obtaining the right appearances on drawings. It also looked at representing and drawing intersection and oberlapping of volumes. The lightbulb project was done to learn how to reconstruct object in various meth-ods and ways of representing them.

The current seminars is about Voxels and pixelisation. It looks at textures, theirs rep-resentation, their simplification...The project was realised after delaminating footages of body movements and creat-ing forms from their tracings. These forms were given textures and are now being represented in pixelated animations.

Derived from an exhibition on lightbulbs at the Huntington Lybrary, this Visual studies project carefully constructs and calibrates lightbulbs from the late19th century and intersects them through projection and rev-olution of 2d linework. The Hybrid resulting object is the refined and rendered using various media. Line renders are created with grasshoper scripts that transform actual rendering of the objects, the artistic renders are digitally created through different means and are based on Josef Albers studies of colors. The interest of this exercise was

placed on the differences and conflicts between rendered images and descriptive geometric drawings.
