Definition/ Origin★Comes from a Greek word meaning ruled by a

person

★A monarch=individual ruler who is in charge of the state and obtains his position through heredity

★ Usually king, queen or prince. The possession of throne usually from father to son but other arrangements can be made within family or monarchical dynasty

History★Oldest form of government in the United

Kingdom

★Goes back to the seventeenth century, Monarchs were able to pass legislation

★When the signing of the Magna Carta took place people started:

~questioning the Crown ~fighting for rights & God was more important

History★Chaos led to a Civil War. Parliamentarians drew

up a Bill of Rights(1689) ★Constitutional monarchy as we know today

didn’t take place until the 18th and 19th century ★Walter Bagehot came up with the idea of Royal

Beliefs/Ideals★Christianity is the main religion in Britain

★Was one of the first religions that was brought to Britain

★The Queen is not the head of the church but just

Rules/Policies★Succession of throne= descent

★For Royal Family is the sequence of members in order in which they stand in line to the throne

★Right to succession is regulated by the Act of Settlement(1701), Marriages Act(1772), and the common law

primogeniture( female member of dynasty to succeed no living brothers, no deceased brothers who left surviving descendants)

★Requirements for individual to be in line of succession:

~He/she is descendant of line from Sophia of Hanover

~He/she has never been Roman Catholic nor married a Roman Catholic

Pros/Cons/Controversies★Pros:

~The Queen is seen as the top and has major popularity

~Lots of people visit Buckingham Palace to see Queen

~Britain makes a lot of money due to tourism

Pros/Cons/Controversies★Cons:

~ British Monarchy use a lot of money for traveling, jewelry, clothes, etc. That could be used for better schools and hospitals

~One person that rules the country can easily transform it into dictatorship

~Don’t know how new Queen will rule the country

★ Jack would be the character that would want to be the king because he wants to be in charge of the island. He only wants to hunt and the kids to follow him.
