about the CompetitiontheAustralianmathematicsCompetition(AmC)has25multiple-choicequestionsandfivequestionsthatrequirewholenumberanswers.studentsmayattemptasmanyquestionsastheywish.theearlierproblemsmayusefamiliarmathematicswhilethelaterproblemsaremoredifficultandareintendedtochallenge.Itisnotatestonthecurriculumbutanopportunityforstudentstodisplayordiscovertheirproblem-solvingtalent.

Resultsresultsarebasedonthetotalscore:Questions1to10areworth3points,11to20areworth4pointsand21to25areworth5points.Questions26to30areworth6,7,8,9and10points,respectively.studentswiththesamenumberofcorrectanswersmayhavedifferentscores.

AwardsuptoPrizearedecidedbycomparingtotalscoreswithinthecountryorAustralianstateandschoolyearofthestudent.AstudentinaparticularyearinacountryorAustralianstatewillonlybecomparedwithotherstudentsinthesamegroup.Asaresulttherewillbedifferentcut-offsforawardsindifferentlocations.

eachstudentreceivesthehighestpossibleaward.Inmostcases:

• PrIZeisawardedtonomorethanonestudentforevery300studentswithineachyearandcountryorAustralianstate.

• hIGhDIstInCtIonisawardedtostudentsinthetop2%(top5%forsenior)ofeachyearandcountryorAustralianstate.

• DIstInCtIonisawardedtostudentsinthetop15%(top25%forsenior)ofeachyearandcountryorAustralianstate.

• CreDItisawardedtostudentsinthetop50%(top60%forsenior)ofeachyearandcountryorAustralianstate.

• ProfICIenCYisawardedtostudentswhoachieveapresetscore,buthavenotbeenawardedaCredit(orhigher)certificate.thescorewillbesetnohigherthan32points.

• PArtICIPAtIonisawardedtoallotherstudents.

extra awards• PruDenCe:thiswillbeawardedtothestudentineachschoolwiththehighestnumberofconsecutivecorrectresponsesstartingfromquestion1.Ifthereisatiethenthetotalscoreobtainedbythestudentswillbeusedtobreakthetie.Ifthetotalsareequal,morethanoneawardwillbegiven.Inorderfortheawardtobegiventheschoolneedstohaveanentryofatleast50studentsandthewinnermusthaveatleastthefirsttenanswerscorrect.

thereareoftenclashes inabusyeducationcalendarandwhereclashesoccur it ispermittedforaschool towritethecompetitionatthenextavailabledateafterthescheduleddate.suchsittingsshouldbedeclaredonthecertificationform.Inthesecircumstances,studentswillbeeligibleforprizesandotherawards,butthetrustreservestherighttodisqualifysuchawardsincaseswheresecuritymayappeartohavebeenbreachedorforasimilarreason.Anylatesittingshouldbeascloseaspossibletotheofficialcompetitiondate.

WrItInGmorethAnonePAPer:somequestionsappearonmorethanonepaper.studentsmaywritemorethanonepaper,andwillreceiveafeedbackreportforallpaperswritten,butwillonlybeeligibleforcertificates,prizesorotherawardsinthecaseofthefirstpaperwritten.Instancesofmultiplesittingsshouldbedeclaredonthecertificationform.

If extra answer sheets are required these must be obtained from the Amt. We cannot mark photocopies oranswersheetsfrompreviousyears.Ineachdivision,theschoolreceivesoneextracompetitionpaper.thesecanbephotocopiedifnecessary.forevery200entriesorpartthereof,theschoolreceives3extraanswersheets.

2. supervisorsarerequiredforthecompetition.Wesuggest

• onesupervisingteachertoevery40studentsifthestudentsareinonehallorroom

• onesupervisingteacherperclassroomof40studentsorfewerifthestudentsareinseparateclassrooms.

3. PhotocopytheInstruCtIonsforstuDents(page6)fordistributiontostudentsanddisplayonnoticeboards.

4. PhotocopyandcompletethedetailsontheInstruCtIonsforsuPervIsors(page7-8)fordistributiontoallsupervisors.Itisrecommendedthatameetingbeheldwithsupervisorstofamiliarisethemwiththerunningofthecompetitionandtheformatoftheanswersheets.

5. Answersheetschooluseonlyfields

In the top right-hand corner of the answer sheet, below themature ageentry,aretwofieldslabelled‘schooluseonlyI’and‘schooluseonlyII’.theuseofthesefieldsisoptional,butreallyusefulinalargeschool.

thesevalues (ifpresent)willbeusedtoorderthecertificateswithineachschoolyear.thismeans, forexample, thatthecertificatesforall studentswho fill in 7Awill be grouped together, followed by thosewith 7b, etc.Within each of these sub-groups, the certificates will be in alphabeticalorder.Ifyouwishtousethisfacility, it is importantthatallstudentsofagroupfillinexactlythesamecolumnsintheschooluseonlyfields.

Whatisfilledinherewillappearinunobtrusiveyetdistinguishablecharactersinthebottomright-handcornerofeachstudent’scertificateandinthetopright-handcorneroftheir individual letter.Youcanuseeitherorbothofthesefieldstoidentifyyourstudentsinaparticularway.
