Amon & Moav: Forever Restricted by Rabbi Leible Chaitovsky
The parsha tells us that the na-
tions of Amon and Moav have a
restriction that the men may
never marry and join the Jewish
nation. The reasons for this,
according to the Torah, are that
they did not offer bread and
water to the Jews when they
were in the Midbar, and also
that they hired Bilam to curse the Jewish nation. Alt-
hough they showed wickedness, it is curious that they are
treated worse than descendants of Yishmael, MItzrayim,
Eisav, and especially Amalek. All of these nations are al-
lowed to convert and join our people. We don’t need to
list their many iniquities as they are often singled out as
our enemies, much more often than Amon and Moav.
Amon and Moav are descendants of Lot. When Lot was
rescued from captivity by Avraham during the big war be-
tween the four and five kings, there was a great debt of
gratitude that was owed by Lot’s descendants. Malki
Tzedek came to Avarham and, in gratitude for what Av-
raham did, offered him bread and wine and gave him a
very big bracha. Lot learned that the way to show grati-
tude would be to do the same. His descendants should
have learned that the best way to treat the Jewish nation
would be to offer them bread and water, even if they left
out the wine. They also should have hired Bilam to bless
the Jewish nation out of gratitude for what was done to
their Zeidy, Lot. The fact that they showed such contempt
for the Jewish people, forever sealed their fate. The To-
rah says that they did not provide the Jewish with bread
and water when we left Mitzrayim, and that they hired
Bilam to curse us. Such lack of gratitude can never be part
of our people.

Letter from a New Parent
Dear Mrs. Schuh,
Starting a new school is tough, and while our kids are
struggling, we'd like to express our gratitude toward this school.
We are so grateful we chose ASHAR for our children! Aside from
being impressed by the academics and how systematically the
school works, we've been so impressed by how the faculty treats
our children! This is not just their job, this is their life!
I cannot tell you how touched I was by how Rabbi Isaacs came
out this morning to help us get —— into school this morning.
—— was really upset and crying that he's not going to school
today, and when we got to school he refused to go in and sat
down outside and cried. I must admit, I felt lost and also filled
with compassion toward my son. I was about to just take him
back into my car when I asked my husband to go inside to see if
a staff member could help us. I felt so special that his Rebbe
came out just for him. I can imagine how that made ——— feel!
He mattered! He's struggling with the change and all the newness
around him, and you guys just make it pleasant for us!
We love how we can reach you and get a call back real soon
after. I already spoke to Mrs. Elkobi about the episode and she
was so understanding and willing to talk to ———. It makes us
feel like you guys are the greatest partners!
Thank you so much!
