The Project Australia Family
Project Australia is a community organisation helping creative people launch not-for-profit initiatives that focus on Australian needs.
Our three projects are:
• StartGoodStuff; the social innovation innovator and the subject of this manual
• uThinc, the young speakers’ bureau, PA’s profit-for-purpose initiative. Profits from the running of uThinc feed directly into the Start Good Stuff small grants fund, allowing the incubator to provide start up funding to its successful projects.
• Tools4Good; an online toolkit for resources relating to non-profit social innovation. It will eventually be linked to StartGoodStuff so that users of the incubator can access useful tools and resources to help them develop their projects.

StartGoodStuff
What it is
Whilst the Internet and social media make it easier than ever to ensure an idea is open to ‘the world’, busy work schedules, content overload and an appetite for hype seem to result in few ideas going beyond a water-cooler chat, blog post or discussion thread. From our experiences it’s a pretty tough gig trying to start good stuff in Australia. Unless an idea has a registered, incorporated identity, tax deductibility or is proposed by an extremely driven, resilient and networked individual or team, it seems really hard to gain the credibility, volunteers or financial support needed to get the idea ‘off the ground’.
In early 2011 we will launch StartGoodStuff (http://startgoodstuff.org.au) - a free, online platform for the identification, incubation and support of user-generated ideas that seek to create a brighter Australian future. StartGoodStuff provides an easy to use space for people with great ideas to build them into something that can become a reality. Ideas and the subsequent projects must be
• Not-for-profit,
• Actionable,
• Utilising existing assets where available,
• Addressing domestic social needs
• In line with Project Australia’s Charter.
The Drupal based site supports multiple individual members and teams and multiple projects. Projects are housed in three phases: ideas (‘Ready’), planning (‘Set’) and launch (‘Go’). The user generated content and modification allows for flexible planning space within a guided process. Everyone is welcome to contribute and see their ideas put into action with ownership of the ideas remaining entirely with the community!
The innovation we support cuts across twelve theme areas: Environment and Sustainability, Health and Wellbeing, Media and Social Enquiry, Technology and Society, Youth Issues and Empowerment, Employment and Opportunity, Culture and Creativity, Community and Social Services, Democracy and Civil Society, Human Rights and Social Justice, Aboriginal Issues, and Education and Critical Thinking.

Q. What if there is a similar idea already in the incubator?
A. The person posting the idea can decide whether it is worthwhile continuing theirs or joining the existing group.
Q. Who can see an idea once it is posted?
A. Anybody.

A. All ideas are reviewed prior to being forwarded to plan stage. If an idea is inappropriate it will be unpublished until changed by user. Other
users can also flag inappropriate material.

Q. Can I choose more than one ‘area of interest’ for my idea?
A. No.
Q. What’s the difference between a project participant and a project leader?
A. Anybody can join a project and help with its development. The leader is the person responsible for submitting the plan for review (from ‘set’
phase to ‘go’ phase) and driving progress through the incubator. The leader will also be responsible for post-incubator contact with PA through
the Alumni.
Q. Can anybody join a group?
A. The leader specifies joining ‘rules’ upon posting the idea. The group will either be for anyone to join or you may have to request an
invitation.
Q. What if the idea only gathers 4 passionate people?
A. It is up to the group to convince someone else to join or wait. An idea can only be progressed to ‘plan’ status when there are five committed
people contributing to it.
Q. How does PA know there are 5 committed people?
A. We don’t, but it’s in the best interests of the idea that there are.
Q. How long does a group have to wait until they are eligible to move from the ‘ready’ phase to ‘set’ phase?
A. Minimum 1 day beginning after the last group member joins or from posting.

Q. Who can see the ‘plan’? A. Everybody can see all of the plan except the tab called ‘Log’ which is for conversation & wall history. Q. Who can comment? A. Only members of the group. Q. Can a person join a plan after the ‘ready’ phase? A. They can contact the team leader to request permission. Q. Can members of a group get rid of the group leader? A. Go Phase FAQs Q. Can a user/project leader change the project brief post review? A. No. Q. How many attempts does a project get for review? A. 3. Q. What happens if a project is not accepted after 3 tries for review? A. The project is de-activated after a reasonable waiting period for acceptable changes. Q. If successful, how much money does a project receive? A. up to $500. Q. Can users see how much money is available in the pot – and therefore decide to wait until there is more? A. Yes – all users should be able to see collective kitty at all times, as well as other projects in the running. Q. How does allocation work? A. There will be a closing date for projects submitted per month, so that the funding amount is always current. Q. Is the project allocated funding based on criteria other than its worth ie location, ‘area’ of interest’ etc. A. No, just the merits of the plan. Q. If there is $510 in the kitty and two projects waiting for review will the first to be approved get $500 and the second $10? A. The Buts and Bolts
Terms and Conditions By using and/or visiting the StartGoodStuff website at www.startgoodstuff.org.au (Website) you acknowledge your acceptance of these terms and conditions of use (Terms). If you do not agree to any of these Terms, then please do not use the Website. The Website is owned and operated by The PA Trust, known as Project Australia, (PA).
1. PA reserves the right to change these Terms at any time by posting changes online and it is your responsibility to refer to and comply with these Terms on accessing
the Website. Your continued use of the Website after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of these Terms as modified. If there is any conflict between
these Terms and rules and/or specific terms of use appearing on the Website relating to specific material then the specific terms of use will prevail.
2. Membership
If you wish to upload material onto the Website or to engage in any activities within the Website, you must complete the online registration form and become a
member (Member). Each Member is given a login name and a password that is unique to that Member and grants the Member access to their individual account.
You must be *12* years or over to register as a Member. If PA discovers or has any reason to suspect that you have not reached [*] years of age then we reserve the
right to suspend or terminate your Membership immediately and without notice. When registering, you must provide a minimum level of completed information
that is accurate.
You may never use another Member's account without permission. You are solely responsible for the activity that occurs on your account, and you must keep your
account password secure. You must notify PA immediately of any breach of security or unauthorised use of your account. Although PA will not be liable for your
losses caused by any unauthorised use of your account, you may be liable for the losses of PA or others due to such unauthorised use.
3. Use
PA gives you permission to use the Website as set in these Terms, provided that: (i) your use of the Website as permitted is solely for your personal, noncommercial
use; (ii) you will not copy or distribute any part of the Website in any medium without PA's prior written authorisation; (iii) you will not alter or modify any part of
the Website other than as may be reasonably necessary to use the Website for its intended purpose; and (iv) you will otherwise comply with the Terms.
4. Uploaded Content & Contributions
Members may upload content, including discussion comments, audio files, articles, pictures, video clips, data and other information, onto the Website in order to
inform, educate, connect and motivate Members and the wider community, and to engage in any activities within the Website (User Content). User Content will be
available on the Website to be viewed by Members and non-members. User Content should be uploaded or posted onto the Website using the mechanisms provided
for within the Website and in a format as directed on the Website.

5. Licence to PA
You agree that PA (and third parties authorised by PA) may make the User Content uploaded onto the Website available on the Website and on any other media,
whether now known or invented in the future, which may include other Internet sites, television and/or radio and that User Content may be made available with
advertising or sponsorship. You now grant PA (and third parties authorised by PA) a world-wide, non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free, transferable licence to use,
display, publish, transmit, broadcast, reproduce, communicate to the public, copy, re-arrange, store, re-format and sublicence the User Content for such purposes.
You also grant PA the right to issue publicity concerning the User Content and any material, service or programme in which it may be included, and for such
purpose to use and reproduce your name, likeness, image and/or voice (including any photograph, film and/or recording of you) in any media at any time or times
without remuneration.
6. Your IP Rights
You agree and guarantee that any User Content you provide or upload is original to you and does not infringe the copyright or any other rights of any other person.
You must obtain any consents that are necessary for you to provide the above mentioned licence to PA.
You agree and confirm that no aspect of the User Content provided by you will breach any contract or duty of confidence, be defamatory, obscene, indecent,
harassing, threatening, pornographic, liable to incite racial hatred, hateful, offensive or encourage conduct that would be considered a criminal offence, give rise to
civil liability, violate any law, constitute a contempt of court or be calculated to bring any broadcaster or other person into disrepute and all facts expressed by you in
User Content are true to the best of your knowledge and belief and, insofar as your User Content contains any opinions, these opinions are your own and are
genuinely and truly held by you.
You shall be solely responsible for your User Content and the consequences of uploading or publishing them. In connection with all User Content, you affirm,
represent, and warrant that: (i) you own or have the necessary licenses, rights, consents, and permissions to use and authorise PA (and third parties authorised by PA)
to use all patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other proprietary rights in and to any and all User Content to enable inclusion and use of the User Content in
the manner contemplated by the Website and these Terms; and (ii) you have the written consent, release, and/or permission of each and every identifiable individual
person in any of the User Content to use the name or likeness of each and every such identifiable individual person to enable inclusion and use of the User Content in
the manner contemplated by the Website and these Terms. You agree to indemnify PA against all costs and claims by third parties arising from any breach of these
warranties. You consent to any use of the User Content which may otherwise infringe your moral rights pursuant to the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth).
PA does not, unless agreed with you, claim any rights of ownership in any User Content. Unless you agree otherwise, you retain all ownership rights in the material
you upload onto the Website and so you will still have the right to use your User Content in any way you choose, provided that such use does not conflict with or
limit the licence granted to PA.

7. PA's IP Rights
The content on the Website, except all Member generated User Content, including without limitation, the text, software, scripts, graphics, photos, sounds, music,
videos and interactive features, and the trade marks, service marks and logos contained therein, are owned by or licensed to PA. Content on the Website is provided
to you for your information and your personal use and may not be used, copied, reproduced, distributed, transmitted, broadcast, displayed, sold, licensed, or
otherwise exploited for any other purposes whatsoever without the prior written consent of the respective owners. You agree not to circumvent, disable or otherwise

registration process or as part of the upload/download process, will only be used by PA and PA's subcontractors, employees, agents and advisors (including legal
advisors) as part of the process of administering your Membership, when making decisions whether any User Content you seek to upload onto the Website should be
accepted or rejected and otherwise in accordance with PA's Privacy Policy. You can obtain a copy of the Privacy Policy on the Website or by calling PA on 0449

9. Rejection of Content
PA does not promise to broadcast or otherwise make available any User Content. Any User Content may be rejected by PA in its absolute discretion. All decisions
are final and PA will not enter into any discussions or correspondence about why any content has been rejected. We will be guided in our decision to reject content
by our Charter <insert url>.
PA may, in appropriate circumstances, and in its sole discretion, remove certain content or disable access to content that appears to be offensive or legally or
otherwise problematic, e.g. it infringes the copyright or other intellectual property rights of others, or for any other reason PA decides.
10. Disclaimer and Limitation of Liability
You agree that your use of the Website shall be at your sole risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, PA, its officers, directors, employees, members and agents
disclaim all warranties, express or implied, in connection with the Website and your use of the Website. PA makes no warranties or representations about the
accuracy or completeness of the Website's content or the content of any sites linked to the Website. PA assumes no liability or responsibility for and will not be

necessarily represent an opinion held by PA. PA respects the differing opinions of Members but does not profess to share any opinion expressed by a Member and is
no way responsible or liable for any aspect of any User Content.
PA may terminate, change, suspend or discontinue any aspect of the Website, including the availability of any features of the Website, at any time without notice or
liability.
11. Third Party Links
The Website may contain links to third party websites that are not owned or controlled by PA. PA has no control over, and assumes no responsibility for, the
content, privacy policies, or practices of any third party websites. In addition, PA will not and cannot censor or edit the content of any third party site. If you decide
to visit any linked website, you do so at your own risk and you expressly relieve PA from any and all liability arising from your use of any third party website.
12. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws in force in New South Wales and you submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts exercising jurisdiction in New South
Wales.
13. General
If any provision of these Terms is deemed invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of such provision shall not affect the validity of the remaining
provisions of these Terms, which shall remain in full force and effect. No waiver of any term of this these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of
such term or any other term, and PA's failure to assert any right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.

Creative Commons Policy In progress
Attribution
This applies to every Creative Commons work. Whenever a work is copied or redistributed under a Creative Commons licence, credit must always be given to the creator.
Basically the owner of copyright is the creator. So for the user generated content that people post on the site the creator and owner is the user who posted the content. For all
the other content the copyright owner will be PA. That would include the home page, graphics and all the info about PA that PA puts up on the site.
Questions for StartGoodStuff:
1. How will a 3rd party know what content has been created by PA and what has been created by a user? Sometimes it will be obvious, but sometimes it might not be clear. If
the 3rd party can't tell this easily then how will they know whether to give credit to PA
or a user when they copy or redistribute content?
2. In relation to user generated content (UGC), will a third party always be able to tell who the third party is?
a) For example, will you be allowing people to use nicknames when they post this content ? If so, how can the third party give credit to a user who's just given their
nickname? If you have a 'no nicknames' policy, how will that be received by users? Some people might prefer to user nicknames to stay anonymous.
b) Also, there's the issue of people putting up UGC, but giving a deliberately false name. Imagine that John Brown posts as Peter White something controversial then a third
party copies or redistributes that content. The third party would then give credit to the wrong person and Peter White might object and come back at both the third party and
PA for defamation. They could argue that the publication of the content with false attribution was a slur on his or her reputation.
Bon-Commercial
Lets others copy, distribute, display, and perform your work — and derivative works based upon it — but for non-commercial purposes only.
Questions for Start Good Stuff:
1. How to clearly distinguish between commercial and non commercial purposes. Ie putting the content in a book or song that's sold is clearly commercial. But what
about just pasting or embedding the content on another site that happens to sell things on it. What about if that site's also owned by a for profit company? Is that
enough to make it a 'commercial purpose' even if the content that's come from PA's site is not on the goods that are being sold?
Need to define any content on the site that PA doesn't want to allow others to copy without PA’s permission ie logos, designs, purpose of the organisation etc..
Share Alike
Allows others to distribute derivative works only under a licence identical to the licence that governs your work.
Question for Start Good Stuff:
How will PA know that someone has distributed derivative works? Currently there is no requirement in the website to notify PA. Need to build this into the site.
