Ancient Egypt Unit

AbstractThe unit begins with the instructor identifying the purpose for studying Ancient Egypt. The students learn about the history of Ancient Egypt, geography, pyramids, pharaohs, mummification hieroglyphs, and laws through the use of a variety of technologies. The instructor also include why technology should be used in this unit. The author provides a hotlist of resources that will be beneficial to her student. The instructor includes a calendar to outline when each lesson is going to be taught in class. The author also created a “Webbly” website that contains the entire Unit on Ancient Egypt. The instructor wants to make sure the students are engaged, challenged, and motivated to learn about Ancient Egypt.

We are north of the Mediterranean Sea. Our climate is hot and dry because of the Sahara desert.And the Nile River runs through us.Ancient Egypt, Ancient Egypt I want you to open your creative mindsAnd enjoy the adventure of Ancient Egypt.
Context of my project
My sixth grade students will be my participants in the unit.
Ancient Egypt- Social Studies
20 students are in my classroom
Students are intermediate in the use of technology
Students have access to a computer or laptops in the school
I will be the general teacher. I have 1 teacher assistant, and I collaborate with the special education teacher for two of my students.
The two details lessons are three and five out of six lessons
Aim of the Project Students will learn about Ancient Egypt civilization . As the students progress through the unit they will gain knowledge about Ancient Egypt history, geography, laws, hieroglyphs, pyramids, Pharaohs, and Egyptian mummification.
Students will demonstrate their knowledge of Ancient Egypt by
Using inspiration to create a digital time line of the famous Pharaohs they will also use Microsoft Excel to create a chart showing how long these Pharaohs ruled over Ancient Egypt .
Students will use the internet to do an interactive active mummy. The students will learn about the process of mummification.
Students will create a newspaper editorial using Microsoft Publisher .
Student will also go on a field trip .
Students will finish the unit by creating either a rap, poem, and skit to be publish on our class blog .

Lesson Plans
Lesson 3- Mummification
Following a class discussion about mummification, students will first create an apple mummy, and complete an interactive mummy online. Students will explain in their own words in a paragraph about what the experiment taught them about the process of mummification. The students will also present their paragraph to the class. The students will receive three out of four on the rubric based on their apply mummy and their paragraph about what the experiment taught them about the process of mummification.

Lesson 5-Hieroglphics
Following a class discussion about hieroglyphics, student will fist view a video clip of Amenhotep’s newspaper, and write their name in hieroglyphics. Students will then be able to write their own message in hieroglyphics containing accurate drawing and symbols in the correct order. The students will also present their message to the class with the proper translation of the message. The students will receive three out of four on the rubric based on their hieroglyphic message.

The different technology used in this unit include- Inspiration, Microsoft Excel, Publisher , PowerPoint , Filamentality –hotlist, SMART notebook
SMART notebook would be used in lesson 5- Hieroglyphics
The use of the SMART notebook would be used to show how text message is a form of communication used today while hieroglyphics was used in Ancient Egypt as a form of communication. The students will also use take part in a game.
Assistive technology can be used in all of my lesson for my for my students who are low readers
For my low readers students they will use text to speech or visual alternative for sound device that lets my students select any text on the screen to be read aloud.
