IQ

Cognitive Domain:thought processes and intellectual abilities including attention, memory, problem solving, imagination, creativity, academic and everyday knowledge, metacognition, and language.

Domains of Development

Development is described in three domains, but growth

in one domain influences the other domains. Physical Domain:

body size, body proportions, appearance, brain development, motor development, perception capacities, physical health.

Cognitive Domain: thought processes and intellectual abilities including attention,

memory, problem solving, imagination, creativity, academic and everyday knowledge, metacognition, and language.

ethnic identity), moral reasoning, understanding and expression of emotions, self-regulation, temperament, understanding others, interpersonal skills, and friendships.

Mental Domain

logical reasoning, math skills, spatial skills, understanding analogies, verbal skills etc.

Definitions of Intelligence

Intelligence is “adjustment or adaptation of the individual to his total environment,” “the ability to learn,” “and the ability to carry on abstract thinking” (Freeman, 1955).

The ability “to resolve genuine problems or difficulties as they are encountered” (Gardner, 1983).

“Mental activities involved in purposive adaptation to, shaping of , and selection of real-world environments relevant to one’s life” (Sternberg, 1986)

Different Models of Intelligence

T. R. Taylor (1994) identified three independent research traditions that have been employed to study the nature of human intelligence.

1. The psychometric approach

2. Information Processing approach

3. Cognitive approach

Robert Sternberg - Triarchic Theory of Intelligence

While he agreed with Gardner that intelligence is much broader than a single, general ability, he instead suggested some of Gardner's intelligences are better viewed as individual talents. Sternberg proposed what he refers to as 'successful intelligence,' which is comprised of three different factors:

Analytical intelligence: This component refers to problem-solving abilities.

Creative intelligence: This aspect of intelligence involves the ability to deal with new

situations using past experiences and current skills. Practical intelligence:

This element refers to the ability to adapt to a changing environment.

Emotional intelligence means the ability to use your emotions in a positive and constructive way in relationship with others or

“ Knowing how you and others feel and what to do about It.”
