Principle: Solarthermic systemsWhy do we need heat transfer fluids ?

Frost protection,

Corrosion protection &

high temperature loads!!

„Captured“ solar energy heats up a

transmitting agent (the heat transfer fluid)

flowing through the solar collector

which is than used eg. for generation of

domestic hot water.

Why do I need Frost protection?

maximum temperature loads in collectors:

+250 °C flat collector

+300 °C (and higher) vacuum tube collector

Why do I need a thermal stable heat transfer fluid?

Solar systems should generate efficient heat at lower sunshine (spring & autumn)

High loads in summer

High temperatures can destroy (crack) corrosion inhibitors and the glycol

component of the heat transfer fluid

What can happen, when the HTF is cracked?

Corrosion inhibitors can be destroyed as well

Cracking of glycols can lead to the formation of insoluble precipitations

A brown coloration of the fluid shows

overheating of it. But it can be still

usable.

New testing of fluids at high temperatures

When can these overheating precipitations occcur?

Tests at elevated temperatures (up to 270°C) showed that high boiling glycols are

more resistant to thermal stress than mono propylene glycol.

Currently nearly all solar heat transfer fluids are based on mono propylene glycol

Based on these results Antifrogen SOL HT was developed with high boiling glycols

as the freezing protecting component.

Which properties have new solar fluids?

 Alternatives to „regular glycol“:

Test results: summary

Antifrogen SOL HT showed improved thermal resistance in comparison to mono

propylene glycol based heat transfer fluids

Additionally the results showed that the corrosion additives are stable at elevated

temperatures.
