APEC Water-Energy Nexus Expert Workshop Overview Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) will be holding the APEC Water-Energy Nexus Expert Workshop on
October 31st to November 1st, 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.
Today there is a critical need for governments and industry to understand the links between water and energy
production and consumption, termed the water-energy nexus. In particular, proactively addressing potential
energy system vulnerabilities stemming from water resource dependency is important for all nations reliant on
coal to meet their energy and economic development needs. This APEC workshop seeks to raise awareness of
water-energy nexus issues among key decision-makers in APEC economies in light of growing pressure from
climate change and water resource scarcity in the energy sector. The event will bring together a diverse group
of participants from a variety of APEC member economies, including government officials, energy utilities,
technology vendors, international organizations, and academic experts.
The workshop will share information on policy measures, latest technology developments, capacity building
needs, economic considerations, and best practices related to water use for coal-based power generation and
conversion. Attendees can also take a tour of the Water Research Center - established by Southern Company,
Georgia Power, and the Electric Power Research Institute at Georgia Power’s coal-fired Plant Bowen to test the
latest technologies to reduce, conserve, and improve the quality of water returned to the environment from
coal power generation.
