London School of Hygiene and Tropical MedicineDr. RALPH FORD TREDRE has been appointed assistant

director of the Ross Institute of Tropical Hygiene.He was born in South Africa in 1900 of British parents, and was

educated at Johannesburg, Cape Town University, and DurhamUniversity, where he graduated MB in 1923, BHy in 1926, and MD(with commendation) in 1927. He took the DPH in 1926 and theDTM & H in 1928. After holding government appointments inSouthern Rhodesia and in this country, he joined the RAMC in1939, served with no. 1 Malaria Field Laboratory, and was capturedin Crete. He escaped and later served in West Africa in commandof a malaria field laboratory. He was demobilised last October withthe rank of lieut.-colonel.

Hospital Orderlies -

. The Manchester public-health committee has been con-sidering the employment of ward orderlies in the corporation’shospitals. These would do a certain amount of domesticwork, and in addition would carry patients’ meals, attendto the tidying of lockers, and perform other duties connectedwith the general cleanliness of the wards. They wouldenable the nursing staff to devote more time to nursingduties. It is suggested that the appropriate rate of paywould be one slightly higher than the present jE2 168. 7d. perweek of 48 hours paid to charwomen and cleaners, and afigure of 13 per week of 48 hours, inclusive of current warwages additions, is recommended. It is estimated that 168ward orderlies will be required for the five city hospitals, buttheir appointment will permit a reduction of 68 in the author-ised number of cleaners and wardmaids (540). If a proposalis adopted for increasing the pay of cleaners to jE3 128. perweek, the rate for ward orderlies will be raised to f3 15s. 5d.Westminster Hospital is proposing to appoint two girls as

orderlies to each ward unit, at 1:3 5s. weekly, with uniformsprovided.A Reprint ServiceThe war reprint service of the Josiah Macy, Jr Foundation

has distributed more than 5 million copies of over 400 leadingmedical and scientific articles during the last three yearsfor medical officers of the Armed Forces of the United Statesand their allies. The service will be discontinued at the endof this year.

Notifications.—The following cases of infectious diseasewere notified during the week : smallpox, 0 ; scarletfever, 1779 ; whooping-cough, 1225 ; diphtheria, 574 ;paratyphoid, 0 ; typhoid, 5 ; measles (excluding rubella),611 ; pneumonia (primary or influenzal), 744 ; cerebro-spinal fever, 41 ; poliomyelitis; 28 ; polio-encephalitis, 5 ;encephalitis lethargica, 1 ; dysentery, 242 ; ophthalmianeonatorum, 54. No case of cholera or typhus wasnotified during the week.The number of service and civilian sick in the Infectious Hospitals

of the London County Council on Dec. 5 was 1108. During theprevious week the following cases were admitted : scarlet fever,7; diphtheria, 54 ; measles, 9 ; whooping-cough, 21.Deaths.-In 126 great towns there were no deaths from

enteric fever or measles, 1 (0) from scarlet fever, 6 (2)from whooping-cough, 7 (0) from diphtheria, 36 (6) fromdiarrhoea and enteritis under two years, and 35 (6) frominfluenza. The figures in parentheses are those forLondon itself.The number of stillbirths notified during the week

was 202 (corresponding to a rate of 29 per thousandtotal births), including 32 in London.
