ORDINARY WORLD

Katniss lives in District 12 along with her sister, Prim, her best friend, Gale and her mom. Illegally, Katniss hunts in the Meadow. On Reaping Day, Prim was called to be a tribute. Katniss volunteered for her sister. Now, Katniss has begun her journey.

MEETING T

HE MENTO

R

I believe Katniss’ mentor is her father. The mentor gives the hero wisdom for their journey. Katniss’ dad became a role model to her. He taught Katniss who she was and how to hunt. He showed her how to use a bow and arrow. One day, he showed her that katniss is a name of an arrowhead plant. He said, “As long as you can find yourself, you will never starve.”

*Supernatural Aid

*The supernatural aid is normally a special weapon that gives the hero strength. The bow and arrow isn’t her greatest weapon. I believe the unconditional love shown by Peeta is Katniss’ greatest weapon. Even when Katniss hurts him or pushes him away, Peeta loves her. Peeta’s love is her motivation and without him she can’t handle the pain. Every hero needs their special weapon.

CROSSING THE FIRST THRESHOLD

The hero has to face an ultimate challenge/obstacle, and they can’t return home after this phase in the journey. After Katniss volunteers for Prim, she rides a train to the Capitol. She can’t go back home anymore. Also, once Peeta announces his crush he has on Katniss, she doesn’t handle it well. She has to change and pretend they are madly in love for the rest of their lives. This challenges Katniss because she is not good at making herself seem desirable.

Belly of the Whale

The hero appeared to have failed, but they emerge and become stronger than before. In The Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta pretend to eat the nightlock. At the last second, they were announce victors. In Catching Fire, Katniss blows up the arena. From out of nowhere, Plutarch Heavensbee swoops in and saves Katniss from the Capitol. In Mockingjay, Katniss and her crew appeared to be dead when the Peacekeepers destroyed the house. Many people celebrated while many were in disbelief. Her team rose, and they became stronger because of teamwork. Every time there is a great loss, there is a greater victory to proceed.

Road of Trials

The hero has to go through many challenges on their journey. One of the biggest challenges Katniss has is making others like her. Haymitch says, “You have as much charm as a dead slug.” Also, Katniss asks Cinna, “How do I make people like me.” Katniss doesn’t get attached easily, but during her journey, so many of her friends die.

MEETING THE TEMPTRESS

The Temptress usually appears as a beautiful girl. They distract the hero from completing their task. Katniss’ temptress isn’t a person that gets in the way of finishing her journey. I believe that Katniss’ temptress is suicide. She is always tempted to kill herself. She wants death often.“My name is Katniss Everdeen. Why am I not dead? I should be dead. It would be best for everyone if I were dead.”

Meeting the Goddess

• The Goddess always makes the hero feel more confident when the hero wants to quit. In The Hunger Games, Katniss finds her "Goddess" differently. At this point, Katniss hates everyone because they all want her to be a victor or die in their Games. She comes across Cinna, and he appears different than all of the rest. He says before the Games, "I would bet on you girl on fire". He gives Katniss confidence. When she is nervous in both interviews, she looks at him. Cinna knows who Katniss is, and he makes her Mockingjay dress to send a message. He knew he would be punished. The "Goddess" died when Katniss was preparing for the 2nd Games. In Mockingjay, Katniss doubts being the Mockingjay but when she sees the notes left by Cinna she decides to fulfill her destiny.

Atonement with

the Father

This stage shows how the hero listens

to their father figure. In The Hunger

Games, Katniss doesn’t have a father

to help her finish the quest. I believe

Haymitch is more of a father- figure to

Katniss. Sometimes they get into

arguments or battles. Haymitch

always calls her, "Sweetheart".

Haymitch tries to save the boy that

Katniss tries to protect. He makes

promises to save him even if it means

her death. In the end, Haymitch tries

to protect Katniss and Peeta. As

teenagers we feel that parents don't

understand. Haymitch understands

her even if he is drunk all the time.

Haymitch always gives her advice and

the truth.

APOTHEOSIS

In this stage, the people around the hero honor the hero, and become a legend. In The Hunger Games, Katniss denies her power. Gale tells her, "Its finally happening... they're looking at you” She says, "I don't want people looking at me. Why couldn't I just eat the berries". Katniss takes all of her wisdom and chooses her decisions by experience. In Mockingjay, Katniss has to find out if the president is the real enemy. She ponders on the eff ects and then she takes action. After the Reaping, she wasn't called the girl who volunteered for her sister. After the second Games, she wasn't called the “Girl on Fire”. In the end, Katniss developed into the Mockingjay. Her presence could change the environment, and that happens because of her fighting personality.

The Ultimate Boon

In The Hunger Games, Katniss starts her journey of defiance when she and Peeta ignite the spark and pretend to commit suicide. The "Ultimate Boon" would be the team of eight soldiers which including Katnip, Finnick, and Gale went against The Capitol. They all fought because they were all impacted by the Capitol. I would say that they beat the enemy but it wasn't victory. There were so many losses along the way. The ones who survived had to live with that. When Katniss let the arrow go, she ended the power.

The Refusal of the Return

The character starts to doubt if home is really what they want. In The Hunger Games, Katniss suggest eating the nightlock with Peeta just so the government wouldn't win. She doesn't want to die in vain. She wins that battle and that aids her family. In Catching Fire, Peeta tells Katniss that he would die, so she can live. He knows that her family needs him while no one needs him. He doesn't want to go home because it would be miserable. Katniss and Peeta cannot go back to District 12 because it is destroyed.

The Magic Flight

• In Mockingjay, Katniss sits in a room and starves herself for about two weeks. She punished herself and wanted to end her life. Haymitch rescued her from herself, and there next trip was to the Victor's Village in District 12. Also, in Catching Fire, Katniss fought hard to keep Peeta alive in the Games. The last night, she blew up the arena. Plutarch and his group rescued Beetee, Finnick and her. She was rescued before she finished her known mission.

Rescue from Without

• Every hero wants to be independent. Every hero needs a hero. In The Hunger Games, Katniss wasn't liked until she was desirable. Peeta was her hero because he liked her. In Catching Fire, the morphling saved Peeta when the monkey tries to attack him. She protected Peeta and sacrificed herself. In Mockingjay, Katniss tries to eat the nightlock pills, but Peeta puts his hand in front to stop her. I believe those characters need each other through the journey. They need each other to be the hero.

Crossing the Return Threshold

So many people loved the experience in Heaven is For Real because we can't knit the two worlds together. The little kid couldn't describe it, and some people didn't want to believe it. In Catching Fire, Katniss came back from the arena. She was back home, but she knew things were different. Prim was maturing, her mom was becoming responsible, and Peeta didn’t speak much to her. Her life changed because she had to continue her act, and she hallucinated dead tributes when hunting. She has nightmares every night. Only Haymitch and Peeta can understand and relate to Katniss.

Master of Two Worlds

Peeta and Katniss are masters of the arena and of being parents. Peeta knows how to bake bread, but in the Capitol he learns how to camouflage himself in the arena. Katniss knows how to hunt, but must quickly learn how to kill people with the same weapon. Katniss knows the difference between riches and necessities.

Freedom to Live

O This stage of the story is where some heroes celebrate. They recognize that the journey has ended. In Mockingjay , Katniss and Peeta live together back in District 12. They have children together. They begin a new life. Katniss says, "But there are much worse games to play. The greatest thing for Katniss is to see her children not go through the Reaping and becoming like Prim because she wouldn't be able to save them.

Hero

Katniss Everdeen is the hero because she has an enormous journey to take. While on her journey, other people looked up to her as a role model. One girl said, “When I get older, I’m going to volunteer just like you did.” She gives everyone hope, and is determined to complete her goals.

Allies

Allies

Katniss has many allies through her journey. They change many times because Katniss doesn’t trust others easily. Katniss’ closest ally would be Gale Hawthorne. Both of their fathers died in a mining accident. Gale was always there to protect Katniss and her family. Also, Peeta is a great ally to Katniss because their relationship grows when they are in the Games. She has many allies such as Beetee, Finnick, Rue, Haymitch, and Johanna.

Herald

Effie Trinket comes to District 12, and tells them about the tradition of the Hunger Games. She gave Katniss the adventure.

Mentor

Also I believe Gale could be another mentor towards Katniss. He usually agrees and understands Katniss. He is always there for here. Also, through Katniss’ journey, Prim become wiser. She talks to Katniss at the right times. Prim always tells her the right thing to say.

Shadow

President Snow

He is the ultimate enemy of Katniss. Katniss doesn’t fear him himself, but she fears that he could kill her family. Katniss plotted to kill President Snow at the end of her journey.

Threshold Guardian

The Gamemakers

They Gamemakers use their fancy technology to make many disasters for the tributes. They used fire, mutts and other methods to have great entertainment.

Tributes

The tributes are each others “Threshold Guardian”. They prevent each other from winning the Games. They have to kill each other. With vicious tributes and mischievous Gamemakers, “The odds aren’t exactly in their favor.”

Trickster

President Coin

President Coin is the president of District 13. She wants Katniss to be the Mockingjay in order for District 13 to rise with power and for the Capitol to fall with President Snow. Snow convinces Katniss that she is the real enemy.

Shapeshifter

Johanna Mason

When Katniss first saw Johanna, she disgusted by her attitude. Along her journey, she started to understand her. Johanna said, “ They can’t hurt me. I’m not like the rest of you. There’s no one left I love.” Katniss was attacked by her, but it was for her protection. At the end of her journey, they become allies and they both want to kill Snow.

Higher Self

Katniss’ dad is her mentor because he showed her how to hunt with the bow and arrow. He told her that Katniss (the name) came from the arrowhead plant. Throughout her journey, Katniss is reminded of the song her father sung called “The Hanging Tree.” Katniss wants to be like her dad, and we see that through her journey.
