appearancesinCruz’searlyworks.

Mycurrentfocusisexploringspaceanddevelopingaplaceto

enterthepaintingandworkyourwaythough.Iamparticularly

interestedincreatinganenvironmentandbuildingupon

emotionallychargedcontentviathefigureinthat

environment.Thethickapplicationofpainthelpsmetopull

formsoutandcarveoutplaceonatwodimensionalsurface.My

workisvisceralinnature,chargedwithemotionandattimes

franticallylaidout.

TheworkspresentedhereareareflectionoftheprofoundgriefIexperiencedafterthedeathsofmysons.Theangeltitled"NoWords,"wasdoneafterChristopherdiedin2004.Ipaintedfor18months,overandover,Iwantedtoshowsomebody,everybody,theworld,howdevastatedIfeltandItrulyhavenowordstodescribeit.

In2011,MatthewdiedandIbeganthenextfourpieces.Iworkedtheboy,titledWinter,withthesameintensityastheangel.Thecollectiontookabouttwoyearstocomplete.SincetheirdeathsIamdriventoexplorethehumanconditionthroughtheexperiencesofthewounded,thedesperate,theaged;thoseontheedgeofexistence.

Iamdrawntothesurvivors;thosethatawakeneverydaytodreadedmemory,yetriseandgoon,tryingtoliveasthoughitneverhappened.

maybemorerecognizablethanothers,itistheexpansenotthespecificthatissignificant.Iworkwithimagined,often

Photographscaptureafleetingmomentoflife’sevents;aglimpse

intoaworldthatnolongerexists.Myaimisprovokingemotion,

thought,understandinganddialog.Iinviteyoutoexplorenew

places,ideasorviewpointsdaydreamormeditate.Mywork

representstheelementsofreallifeastheywere,altering

perceptionthroughcolor.Combininglight,shadows,color,

compositionandperspective,amemorableimage,likeagourmet

meal,blendsingredientscreatingmood,tasteandtexture.

TheelementsofmyimagesarewhatIenvisionedasidefrom

alteringcolor.Idon’tusePhotoshoptoadd,deleteoraltercaptured

events.

Highlighted artwork

"Ferns,"andtheaccompanyingpieces,illustratevaryingdegreesofformandcolorabstraction.Alonefernhanginginthedarkwasbacklitbyastartledsecuritylight.Brightbeamsofunfilteredlightshonethrough,interspersedwiththefern'sbalancedshadows.Varyingsoftearthshadesofgreenandbrowncontrastedwithstarkbrightanddarkness.Allelements,motionandblureffectsresultfromlow‐light,handheld,manualcameratechniques,withoutflash.Thefernnolongerresembleswhatweknow,orwhatwethink.Withoutbeingledbyobviousanddefinitivesubjectmatterourbrainisallowedtocreate ornot ,oftentimeswithoutourinputandfantasticresults.

Ihavealwayslovedartanddrawing,sinceIwaslittle,watchingmymomdrawlittleflipbooks.Iwasexposedtoit,andlivedwithit,andeventuallylearnedtodrawmyself,especiallycartoonsandcomics.Drawinggavemesomepurpose,IfeltlikeIcoulddosomethingimportant.

Mygoal,withmyart,hasalwaysbeentocreatesomethingoriginal,somethingthatlookedrealistic,butwasstraightoutofmyimagination,withnoreferences.Ilaterlearned,however,thatincorporatingknowledgeaboutart,andmyownexperiences,wasnecessary‐‐inordertocreatemy

"uniquerealism"onablankcanvas,orwall,orpieceofpaper.Ilearnedtousereal‐liferules,inordertomaketheimaginarybelievable.
