Set in a small town just outside Mumbai, the concept was to promote the winery as a ‘wine museum’. The wine-making process constantly informed the design-a reference while organizing the functions and their orientation. Local stone and tiles were used to ensure cost-effectiveness and sustainability. Garden roofs, abundant landscaping facilitated the necessary greening.

As Toledo lacks a signifi cant downtown residential population and the services needed to sustain one, we propose to create a mixed-use structure that will include residences, commercial spaces and social amenities. The target demographic groups will include urban professionals, young families, and the elderly, the last two of which are essentially absent from the downtown area. The architecture will focus on the creation of community by highlighting shared social spaces, orienting all domestic units toward a central garden court, and using circulation spaces as focal elements to provide residents with a sense of participation in a broader community.

Based on the data available from the city of Detroit on the proposal for the new light rail, redesign the stops and the area around the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and Medical Center. Concepts of walkability, sustainability, neighborhood creations and streetscapes were emphasized. The historic character of the vicinity had to be retained. We needed to elements that would pull people to use (liven up) this area.

I addressed the project through my personal experience of living in a “colony” form of housing where courtyards and central common spaces are the most emphasized. In such colonies the balconies become very important as they link each individual house with the rest of the community and facilitate communication. Thus I commenced with the element of a balcony, studied its importance and ways it could be used as the ‘connector’.
