At Asian Paints, we thrive on colour. For over

six decades, we have brought colour, across the

spectrum, into the homes and hearts of millions

of consumers around the world.

The 10th edition of India’s pioneering colour

forecast, ColourNext 2013, is the outcome

of a journey across India to gauge changing

dynamics of consumer behaviour that define

a decor direction. Curated by design experts

across India, it is based on an in-depth study of

societal, lifestyle and design trends in the

last year, and how these affect colour choices.

Our select panel’s intuitive insight and aesthetic

flair synthesize these directions for us to come up

with the key colour trends for the year.

A PALETTEOF STORIESFOR THE YEARTO COME...

Break away, wash your spirit cleanin a place where the only sound is silence.

In nature’s inventions nothing is lackingand nothing is superfluous.

Androgyny is not trying to managethe relationship between the opposites;it is simply flowing between them.

- JUNE SINGER

All you need to discover infinite possibilitiesis the simple magic trick of shifting perspectives.

The future is like a mansion with room upon room upon room crammed with all sortsof fascinating things. All we have to do is open the door and enter.

A pause stimulates an individual’s needfor a  quiet sojourn  with the self. In a tranquil space that reverberateswith meaning and touches the spirit, one can immerse oneself in contemplation and introspection. The momentary stillness  restores  one’s emotional andinternal rhythm.  What follows is a senseof harmony, restoration and rejuvenation.

The state of silence leads us inwards.

Layers of colour tones symbolize the emotional transition that the mind goes through. While soft whites and beiges create a placid, light and clean mood, deep contemplative blue-greys evoke a sense of stillness.

Listento the soundsof silence.

- SIMON AND GARFUNKEL

Soft surf and shifting sand sets the mood for “Pockets of Silence”.

Candles lit in small brass containers that glow and reflect light.

Shells collected during walks on quiet beaches find their place in a ceramic bowl.

Light casting shadows on natural stone floors.

Uncluttered and simple lifestyle choices lead one to a peaceful mind.

Fabrics that aresoft and naturaland become one with your form.

Hand blown glass and simple mirrors add luminescenceto spaces.

The raw beauty of local, indigenous materials, their singular textures and natural hues, informs this palette. A sophisticated aesthetic,it reflects the sensibilities of that rare individual- well traveled, exposed to and appreciativeof different cultures, but with a creative expression that is uniquely his own.

Taste of Earth brings to life the vibrant world this individual is a part of: a community thriving with imagination in an environment tactile and rich with varying textures and surfaces. When kindred spirits collaborate with their separate skills and an eclectic array of elements the creative output is original, subdued and eloquent.

The antithesis of the use and dispose mindset, upcycling sees objects reappearing like old friends in new, exciting forms. The fact that they retain traces of their old lives makes these products all the more quirky and enjoyable as both past and presentreside in them.

Old magazines strapped together on a wooden tray with a cushion on top makes a great stool.

Old watch movements studded withRhinestones can make precious jewelry.

With every technological breakthroughour human capabilities and potentialget more enhanced. Technology hasnot just become physically smaller and mobile it is more intuitively integratedwith our lives. We no longer conducta one sided operational relationship with cumbersome tools but enjoy a two way interaction. The idea that technologyis becoming an extension of us is becoming more of a reality.

It is a brave new world.

INDIA’S FOREMOST COLOUR TREND FORECAST

COLOURNEXT 2013INDIA’S FOREMOST COLOUR TREND FORECAST

A true trendsetter, Asian Paints ColourNext was widely held asbeing ahead of its time when it was first introduced in 2003. In its10th edition today, it is recognized across the design community forits inspiring trend forecasts for the upcoming year.

THE MAKING

DISCOVERING THE INDIAN CONSUMER

Every year, ColourNext brings together designers and design thinkers, including architects, sociologists and advertising professionals, around India. The select panel collectively studies changing consumerbehaviour to map trend stories that translate into an expertly curatedspectrum of colours.

Central to trend forecasting at Asian Paints is insightful exploration ofconsumer behaviour and its impact on decor choices. ColourNext is anamalgam of this understanding and the sophisticated aesthetic of theeminent panel. The result: a fresh colour vocabulary that inspires newdesign and reveals emerging consumer segments.

THE PROCESS

The ColourNext team begins by looking for clues to the evolving trendsin design and consumer choices. They sift through the gamut of media, explore contemporary design spaces and talk with relevant people from sociologists and anthropologists to design thinkers, trendforecasters and media professionals.

The resulting databank is then presented to select designers acrossIndia who brainstorm over colour associations. They generate a rangeof colour stories and themes that reflects the moods of the year.

The colour stories are then shared with established industry leadersand design experts chosen by the Asian Paints colour marketing team, who further distill the most inspirational themes for the year ahead.

It is this high degree of engagement of the best creative and marketingminds over an extended period of time that gives ColourNext itsdefinitive edge.
