Case 2029-2Austenitic Stainless Steel, 18Cr-20Ni-5.5Si, UNSS32615 ConstructionSection VIII, Division 1
Inquiry: Under what conditions is it permissible inwelded construction conforming to the rules of SectionVIII, Division 1, to use UNS S32615 austenitic stainlesssteel, seamless tubes, seamless pipe, plate, and bars, conforming to the chemical composition requirementsof Table 1 and the mechanical property requirementsof Table 2, and otherwise conforming to the require-ments of Specifications SA-213, SA-312, SA-240, andSA-479 as applicable?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that thematerials described in the Inquiry may be used inSection VIII, Division 1, construction provided thefollowing additional requirements are met.
(a) The grain size of the material, determined inaccordance with ASTM Methods E 112, Plate II, shallbe No. 3 or finer.
(b) The maximum nominal thickness of the weldshall be limited to 12 in.
(c) The rules in Section VIII, Division 1, SubsectionC, Part UHA, for austenitic stainless steel shall apply.
(d) The maximum design metal temperature shallnot exceed 400F.
(e) The maximum allowable design stress valuesshall be those listed in Table 3.
(f) For external pressure design, use Fig. 5,UHA-28.1.
(g) Separate welding procedure and performancequalifications shall be conducted for the material inaccordance with Section IX. Welding shall be limitedto the GTAW and GMAW processes.
(h) This Case number shall be included in the materialidentification and on the Data Report.
