ATKINSON, Neb. — Croftonwon a combined 15 events tosweep the team track & field ti-tles at the Northeast NebraskaActivities Conference (NENAC)Meet on Thursday at Atkinson,Neb.

The girls’ division was espe-cially loaded with Lady Warriorsin first place. Crofton rolled up154.2 total points to finish aheadof Laurel-Concord-Coleridge,which was second at 116.

Crofton had three double win-ners, including Danielle Riesbergin the 100 (12.8) and 200 (27.0)dashes, Allison Arens in the 1600(5:43.8) and 3200 (12:44.6), andMaria Wortmann in the discus(125-8) and shot put (38-8.5).

The Lady Warriors, who werealso first in the 400, 1600 and3200 relays, got a individual titlefrom Bridget Arens in the 800(2:35.4).

In other area finishes, KelseyDietrich of Laurel-Concord-Co-leridge was first in the 400(1:03.2) and 300 hurdles (49.0),and teammate Amy Pritchardwon the long jump (16-6.25) andtriple jump (33-6).

On the boys’ side, Croftonused its strength in field eventsto lead the way. The Warriorswere first with 144.33 totalpoints, ahead of West Holt at105.66.

Tom Peitz of Crofton was firstin the discus (156-9) and shot put

(53-4.75), while Evan Woockmanwon the pole vault (10-6). AlexJanssen was first in the 1600(4:50.3) and 3200 (10:26.5).

Creighton won the 400 and1600 relays, while Randolph’sLevi Lackas finished first in thehigh jump (5-10).

As the Mount Marty College baseball team prepared for the 2012 season, Jeremy Hoeck and I caught upwith head coach Andy Bernatow for a video clip and story about getting outside for early practices. While wehad him, we also talked to him about the coming season.

One of the things he said that day — and every day since — was that this was a team that had the poten-tial to do special things.

But as the Lancers stumbled to 3-7 at the midway point of the Great Plains Athletic Conference season —and losing seven of eight to fall to 14-23 — those of us outside the team, and maybe some people with the team,

had plenty of reason to doubt Bernatow’s claim.Another loss — this one the opener of a doubleheader at Concordia — dropped the Lancers 10 games

under .500 and five games under in league play. Bernatow, with the season in the balance, sat the team downfor one of those “now or never” speeches that almost never works.

It did.MMC ran off six straight wins and finished GPAC play at 10-10, earning a spot in the tournament. Two

games into the GPAC Tournament, MMC is 2-0 and inching closer, not only to .500 overall but a return to theNAIA Opening Round for the second time in three years.

He grew up in Simi Valley, aprosperous suburb just northwestof the sprawling San Fernando Val-ley, and learned the game on itsyouth league fields. Jeff, six yearsolder, had a 12-year major leaguecareer with six teams, winning 104games and a 2006 World Series ringwith St. Louis.

After high school, Jered joinedLong Beach State’s powerful pro-gram, proudly becoming a Dirtbagand winning the Roger ClemensAward as college baseball’s toppitcher. The Angels drafted him12th overall in 2004 and eventuallysigned him after a tense showdownbetween the club and his agent,Scott Boras, who watches hisclient from a field box right behindhome plate in Anaheim.

Weaver’s ascent has been re-markably smooth. He reached themajors in 2006, immediately estab-lishing himself as a starter and win-ning at least 11 games in each ofhis first six seasons. He pitchedwell in the 2009 playoffs and thenmade the past two AL All-Starteams, leading the majors in strike-outs in 2010 despite comically badrun support before going 18-8 lastseason with 198 strikeouts and a2.41 ERA to finish second in the ALCy Young voting to Justin Verlan-der.

And for all his success, freeagency held no interest for Weaver.He loves the Angels’ family vibe,and he embraces the OrangeCounty lifestyle with his wife,Kristin, another former Long BeachState athlete.

So last August, Weaver signed afive-year, $85 million deal to staywith the Angels through 2016. Heprobably passed on tens of mil-lions in free agency — hardly alikely move by a Boras client —but Weaver was determined not tobreak the bank at the risk of leav-

ing his Newport Beach home.“I love this team and this area,

everything about it,” Weaver said.“I’m just glad I got to do this infront of them. That’s how I wouldhave wanted it if I could choose.”

Weaver is particularly dominantat Angel Stadium, where Min-nesota’s Denard Span says his dis-tinct cross-body throwing motionlifts his release point so high thatthe ball actually appears to becoming out of the fake rock pilejust to the left of the batter’s eyebeyond the center field fence.

Weaver also has personal tradi-tions on that mound. He used towrite the initials of his maternalgrandparents in the dirt, but afteryoung Angels pitcher Nick Aden-hart was killed by a drunk driver in2009, Weaver began carving asolemn “NA” into the mound.

He did it before every inning ofhis no-hitter, keeping his fallenfriend close.

“It just keeps me in the rightframe of mind,” Weaver said. “It’s aspecial thing for me, and this is aspecial place.”
