Why do We Need to Upgrade?
Needs Not Being Met
Running out of space
Unable to keep previous job
Takes too long to backup orrestore - slow
Small storage capacity on tapes -400gb
LTO3 transfer rate is slow 80-
140 mb/s
Hardware Issues
LTO3 Tape drive starting to fail
Hardware warranties running out
High cost of warranties
Other Factors
Storage demands keep increasing
More servers and data beingadded continuously
Decreased retention period
Backup jobs overlapping
VTL technology is out of date

Plan to Start Upgrade
1 Received Funding from Tech Fee for $50,000
2 Researched to see what options were available
3 Scheduled Demos and Meetings

Questions we asked solution providers
What are the products/features that your company has in Storage Solution such as
deduplication, Email Archives, CDP, System Recovery, Disaster Recovery, High Availability,..
along with the product name?
Do we need to purchase the agents for each server that we want to backup the data? If not,
does it licenses based on the amount of data that we want to backup?
What is the differences between your product and FalconStor or Symantec?
What is needed to send backups to another location?
What backup software is used by each solution? ex: netbackup, backup exec or it has its own
proprietary software
How does deduplication feature help us reducing the backup time?

Questions we asked solution providers Cont.
Which solutions are utilizing deduplication?
If the solution does not support deduplication then what compression does it have if any?
Do you have tape backup system in your solution?
If so, what is the appliance, and the backup agent & how do they work?
What are the future growth options?
What are the server requirements for each solution and how many?

Company
LOGO Finally, Why Symantec
Has all the features we needed including Deduplication
Bought LTO5 tape drive and PowerVault 24 Tb SAN from Dell
Easy Migration and Setup we did it ourselves
No Knowledge Transfer Needed
Easily Upgradeable & future expansion
Came with 3/5 year Warranty
All for less than our budgeted $50,000

Implementation
We setup new system in conjunction with ourold system.
All jobs were recreated on the new system
Both servers ran simultaneously for the first 2month
We maintained continuity until all backups were
migrated to the new system Moved REO 9000 to DR site for offsite backup

SAN: 24 TB RAW, 18.1 TB Usable, 9.3 TB Used
Deduplication
Took 6 to 8 weeks for dedup to stabilize; size of the backup reduced
gradually
Took a month for backup windows to shrink (due to reduced size)
LTO5 - Amazingly Faster504GB per hour
Backup Window much smaller, do not overlap, do not need to delete
old backups
Some features of backup are automated e.g. Retention period and
reuse of media
Storage 2800 Gb now takes 2 hours vs 24 hours, less space also
Restore is also very fast when needed

Upgrade @ DR LocationSince the implementation of new back up system the
warranty expired on the REO 9000.We replaced this with a the exact same Dell SAN as ourmain campus.
Warranty renewal for 1 year on the REO 9000 was $4,500
whereas a new Dell SAN with 5 yr warranty was $8,500It was easily installed and added and additional 24Tbraw storage .

Things Learned AboutDeduplication
You will gain space over time usingdeduplication
The deduplication calculators from vendorsshowed we needed less space than what weREALLY needed.
You do not regain a lot of space by deleting a
deduplicated backup job. Purchase as much storage as you can afford.
