Thissummer,BasicAssistancetoStudentsintheCommunity(akaBASIC)willawardfive(5)BorregoSpringsHighSchoolStudentsandtwenty-eight(28)continuingstudentsscholarshipstofurthertheireducation.Thepandemichaschallengedeveryoneofthesestudents,buteachofthemhaspersistedinhisorhergoaltograduatefromacommunitycollege,a4-yearcollegeoruniversityorevengraduateschool.Eachofthemissucceeding,eachofthemmeritsoursupport.BASIC’sstart-schoolandstay-inschoolscholarshipprograms,nowintheir23rdyear,havemade410awardstotaling$540,860.Thisyear’stotalof$81,850willbethemosteverawardedandwillbringthetotalamountawardedtoBorreganstoover$620,000!Allofthisispossiblebecauseofthegenerosityofourcommunitysupportingourfundraisers:ourannualFalldonationdrive,ourStPatty’sDayDinnerFundraisersupportedbyKesling’sKitchen,and,pre-pandemic,theCircleofArtandtheGolfTournament.

• KarenGarcia,GreysonLevens,EdwardRiveraandErikTulvingwillreceivetheJoanneandRichardIngwallScholarshipforhavingagradepointaverage(GPA)greaterthan3.75(mostlyA’s).

• ChanelBarron,LeslieGarcia,ElizabethTorres,MariaAriasTorresandLorenzoVilcheswillreceivetheJoannandDavidScholarshipforachievingGPAsbetween3.5and3.75(moreA’sthanB’s).

• These9scholarsdeserveourcongratulations,butallcontinuingstudentsdeservehighmarksforstayingcommittedtotheireducationalgoalsduringthischallengingtime.And66%ofthemhaveearnedGPAsof3orbetter.

Going into college, I was not really confident I could transition smoothly into a large school like UCSD. Not only did BASIC provide financial support that allowed me to focus on school, but they also encouraged me and let me know that they believed in me. Having a community back home that believes in their students really does encourage us to continue to grow academically. They believe in us even when we don't necessarily believe in ourselves.
