JULY 2014
From the Chief’s Desks By: Chief James Trzaski & Assistant Chief Brian DeGeorge We hope everyone is enjoying the summer. Beacon Hose Company No. 1 always starts our summer season on a busy note. Of course I am referring to the Carnival! Thank you to everyone that helped make this another great and successful event. Beacon Hose Members always prove their resourcefulness and this year was no exception. We overcame weather, huge crowds and a power problem. All were dealt with smoothly and swiftly. Thank you to Michael Pratt and Jodi DiZazzo for accepting the challenge of being Co-Chairmen. All of your hard work is appreciated by everyone. We have been busy addressing membership items with the Membership Committee and will now look to bring some items to the By-Law Committee. Our intent is to have a document that is updated monthly to show everyone’s progress throughout the year. Our overall goal is to supply the information needed to give members the opportunity to reach their membership status and qualify for their Service Awards. Department Officers have been given different areas of responsibility. A document defining each Officer’s primary responsibility is being created. At this month’s Officers Meeting, we posed the question “What is hindering Beacon Hose Company No. 1 Members from participation in responses, drills and activities”?. Collectively the Officers have created a list of ideas. Now we are looking to the Membership. We value everyone’s opinions and we want to hear from you. Please take a moment and write down at least 5 reasons why members are not participating. If you prefer, the responses can be anonymous. Leave your ideas on Gretchen’s desk and we will compile them and create a “Top 10” List. Thank you again for your participation in activities and responses. We are looking forward to seeing everyone
at the Family Day Fireworks, on the 12th, for some food and fun. Have a Happy and Safe July!!

BHC Monthly Safety Tip ~POOL SAFETY~ Contact the Building Department before any pool installation…..including portable pools
Install a four-foot or taller fence around the pool and spa and use self-closing and self-latching gates…. ask your neighbors to do the same at their pools.
Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa. If your house serves as a fourth side of a fence around a pool, install door alarms and always use then.
For additional protection, install window guards on windows facing pools or spas. Install pool and gate alarms to alert you when children go near the water.
Ensure any pool and spa you use has compliant drain covers and ask your pool service provider if you do not know. Maintain pool and spa covers in good working order. Consider using a surface wave or underwater alarm.
