2/8: Warm Up 1Baby Mice
Seif's pet mouse had babies. Five of the babies were black and two were white. The father mouse was black and the mother was white. Seif and his friends wondered why the mice were different colors. These were their ideas:
Jerome: Baby mice inherit more traits from their fathers than their mothers.
Alexa: The baby mice got half their traits from their father and half from their mother.
June: Male traits are stronger than female traits.
Seif: Black mice have more traits than white mice.
Fiona: The black baby mice are male and the white baby mice are female.
Lydia: Parents' traits don't matter-nature decides what something will look like.
Billy: Blood type determines what traits babies will have.
Which friend do you most agree with and why? Explain your thinking.

2/15 or 2/16: Warm Up 5Blue-eyed People
1.) Why should you shake the hand of the nearest blue-eyed person?
2.) Originally people all had what colored eyes?3.) What was the switch that turned off the ability to
produce brown eyes?4.) Most mammals share the normal form of what gene?5.) Where do the scientists figure the mutation took
place?6.) Neither the first person to have the mutation, nor
his or her children would have blue eyes. What had to happen for the trait to show up?
7.) The blue-eyed mutation is not considered to be a positive or negative but it does create a survival advantage in northern European countries. What is the advantage?

Some superheroes have a special allele on the gene for eyesight. One of the homozygous traits is the ability to see through solid objects. (xx) The other homozygous trait is normal 20/20 vision (nn). The heterozygous condition (xn) gives a superhero that can’t see through objects, but has REALLY good vision, like a hawk.
A.) What type of inheritance is this?
B.) Two superheroes have kids. One has x-ray vision. The other has hawk eye vision.
Write the cross:
C.) Make the Punnett Square.
D.) What are the phenotypes of the offspring?
