Where freshwater dolphin populations are thriving, it is likely that the overall river systems will be flourishing too – as well as all of the communities, companies and countless other species that depend on them.BUT RIVER DOLPHINS ARE AT RISK

There are only five extant species of river dolphins left in the world today and they are all endangered or critically endangered.  This is because pollution, dams, shipping and by catch have taken their toll on this iconic species.

Some general information Current campaigns/ organizations try to help these species.WHAT WWF IS DOINGWWF is using quad copter drones to track and count Amazon River dolphins—a method that’s swifter and potentially more accurate than traditional monitoring by humans. They’re also developing a joint regional approach among Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil to protect the species across borders.

Also known as “boto” or “pink river dolphin”, the Amazon River dolphin swims throughout much of the famed South American river basin and the neighboring Orinoco river basin that stretches through Colombia and Venezuela. The species is characterized by its long snout and pale pink color.

We are going to inform students , so they can help their communities understand that dolphins are intelligent and capable of great suffering through mistreatment. The power of the young people in the region could be truly inspiring.We will collaborate with local residents and we will provide workshops for local guides and visitors to ensure they become a part of the team to help save the Amazon River dolphin and its environment. We intent to apply satellite GPS technology, an attempt to understand river dolphin health and migratory patterns.These findings will inform plans to secure the landscapes and rivers these dolphins need to survive.

By 2030, we will have stopped the decline of river dolphin populations in Asia and South America, and will have restored and doubled some populations. We will achieve this by tackling the three major systemic threats to river dolphins - unsustainable fisheries, hydropower and infrastructure, and pollution.

Communication, Awareness and Fundraising Campaign:

As many people do not know the existence of river dolphins, let alone that they are at risk of extinction, we have planned to launch an awareness campaign to inform people and governments about river dolphins and the urgency of the situation to save both them and their habitats.
