Synopsis

A Brief History of Greek

Mythology goes back to the times

of the Greek civilization, the most

advanced of the Ancient World and

the cradle of Western culture,

which flourished in approximately

the 3rd millennium B.C. on the

island of Crete.

The interpretations of the Greeks

for unexplainable planetary and

celestial phenomena gave rise to

basic beliefs and animist responses

with a surprising touch of genius

which converted these interpreta-

tions into beautiful legends. In this

manner, the original and elemental

gods such as Chaos, the origin of

everything, Cronus, Uranus, Zeus

and Hera, Hades and Persephone,

etc. were born. Later, heroes like

Achilles, Odysseus, Ulysses,

Hector, Patroclus, and Perseus

came and carried out wonderful

adventures and challenged the will

and desires of the gods.

Greek culture filled their collective

imagination with numerous unique

beings and stories. Along with the

great gods and minor divinities

lived glorified mortal heroes as

well as a series of fantastic creatu-

res that together comprise the

honor roll of Greek mythology.
