Afteroriginallybroadcastingfromatemporarylocation,thestationmovedintoitshomeat1089BannockStreetinDenverin1953,whereitstayeduntilmovingtoourcurrentlocationat500SpeerBlvdin1992.Afterinitiallysharingprogrammingfromavarietyofnetworks,Channel9becameanABCaffiliateformorethan40yearsuntilswitchingtoourcurrentNBCpartnershipin1995.Channel9’scallletterschangedfromKBTVtoKUSAin1984.
MaxGoldbergiswidelyconsideredthe“father”ofChannel9fororganizingtheoriginalgroupofinvestorsandlobbyingforanFCClicense,thekeyingredientforallradioandtelevisionbroadcasters.In1955,JohnMullinsboughtthestation,whichheowneduntilhisdeathin1969.In1971,acompanycalledCombinedCommunicationsCorporationboughtthestation,makingitpartofagroupthatwouldeventuallymergewithGannett,nowoneofthelargestmediacompaniesinthecountrywithTVstationsin32Americancitiesandanewspapergroupthat includesUSAToday.
Inthebeginning,Channel9wasmerelyasingleTVchannel.Today,webroadcastprogrammingonKUSAChannel9aswellasKTVD Channel20(since2006)anddigitalchannels9.2(9NEWSNow,24hourweatherprogramming)and20.2(MeTV).Inaddition,9NEWSisnowverymuch9NEWS.COM,launchedinthe1990sandnowavitalnewssourceforColoradansthatupdatesnews,weatherandsports24hoursaday.
Ourcommunityeffortshavedefined9NEWSfordecades.Programslikethe9HealthFair,BuddyCheck9,9CaresColoradoShares,9Who Careand9TeachersWhoCareareallaimedatmakingourcommunitybetter,strongerandhealthier.Thestoryof9NEWSisanevolutionofpeopleandtechnology.Filmtovideotape.Blackandwhitetocolor.Analogtodigital.Butonethingthathasn’tchangedsince1952isourcommitmenttobringColoradothebestprogrammingpossible.
In1952HarryTrumanwasinthelastyearsofhisPresidencyandthehotnewthinginDenverwasanexotictechnologycalledtelevision.OnOctober12,1952KBTVChannel9beganbroadcastingamixtureofABCandCBSnetworkprogramsaswellaslocalnewsandotherprogramming,thebeginningofalegacythatcontinueswellintoanewcentury.WhenChannel9wasborn,onlyafewhomeshadTVsets,butthatchangedovertimeuntilvirtuallyeveryonehadaccesstoone.
