PRI to SIP Trunking Migration: 3 Reasons to Make the Move
2
Business are wasting an enormous amount of time and money with legacy primary rate interface (PRI)
phone service. Bandwidth SIP Trunking is a better way to support your business by giving you more.
More scalability. More simplicity. More flexibility.
What is PRI?A Primary Rate Interface (PRI) is the legacy method of providing
telephone service to larger businesses with a digital PBX. PRI
operates within the Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN)
specification for transmitting voice and data between a network
and a user. It’s based on the T-carrier (T1) line consisting of 24
channels, 23 for voice and one for signaling. For the business user,
this equates to 23 lines for phone service, hooked up directly to the
telephone company’s central office.

So what’s SIP Trunking? Session initiation protocol (SIP) is an application layer protocol similarly used to
transmit voice and data between a network and a user. SIP supports the standard call
processing functions found in the public switched telephone network (PSTN) for IP-
based networks, mimicking PSTN functions such as call ring, ring back, busy, and other
signaling based functionality found in the PSTN.
SIP Trunking, a service Bandwidth helped pioneer, establishes virtual voice circuits
configured and delivered over an Internet connection. Used in conjunction with an
IP PBX or traditional PBX with an IP gateway, businesses gain a much more robust
replacement for traditional PRI or analog circuits.

The PRI scalability gap In much the same way that cable companies insist you purcase a package of multiple channels to receive the programming from the few
channels you actually want, providers sell PRI services in packages of 23 channels for voice.
Hire a new employee and now need an extra channel? You now have to upgrade to the next packaged bundle and pay for 23 more
channels as opposed to the one extra channel you need. And it gets even more complicated if you have to plan for seasonal call
volumes or remote workers. In the case of seasonal workers, with PRI you have to over-engineer your phone system based on your
highest need, even if that need is just temporary. With Bandwidth SIP Trunking, you provision trunks only when needed and only for
as long as you need them. Teleworkers? PRI leaves you with private extensions with POTs lines and multiple providers and bills. Want a
better way? With Bandwidth SIP Trunking, you get a local number for your remote folks, without additional hassles.

9-1-1 baked in
And speaking about 3rd party dependencies, we absolutely can’t forget about 9-1-1.
Bandwidth is one of only three tier 1 providers able to pass VoIP 9-1-1 calls into the
nation’s 9-1-1 infrastructure. Of those, we are the only one to also offer SIP Trunking.
So yet again, we have a better way because with Bandwidth, you don’t need an
additional vendor to be 9-1-1 compliant.
