Cactus

A desert plant with spines.

The cactus leaves are the sharp spines.

Cacti

Two or more desert plants with spines.

Cacti have thick waxy stems. They store water in these stems.

Woodpecker

A bird that climbs on the trunk of a tree and hammers with its hard bill.

The woodpecker uses its hard bill to make holes in tree trunks as it looks for food.

Saguaro

A tall cactus that looks like a person with his arms up.

The saguaro cactus is only found in Arizona and a small part of California.

A reptile with a long body, 4 legs and a long tail.

Lizards communicate with body language. They have good eye sight and see in color.

Flower

The blossom of a plant. It is colorful and has petals.

The saguaro flowers bloom at night.

Hotel

A place to spend the night when you are away from home.

In Kenya there is a hotel in the treetops. There is a tree house hotel near Mount Rainier National Park.

Forest

An area of land covered with trees.

There are 3 types of forest. There are coniferous forests, deciduous forests, and tropical rain forests.

Paloverde

A desert tree or shrub.

The seeds can be ground and used as flour.
