Lungcancerhasbeenthemostcommoncanceroverallforseveraldecades.In2012,worldwide,thereareestimatedtohavebeen1.8millionnewcases(12.9%ofallincidentcancercases),58%ofwhichoccurredinthelessdevelopedregions.Thediseaseremainsthemostcommoncancerinmenworldwide,with1.2millioncasesestimatedtohaveoccurredinmenin2012(16.7%ofthetotalnumberofallincidentcancercasesinmen).Thehighestestimated2012age-standardizedincidenceratesinmen(per100000men)wereincentralandeasternEurope(53.5cases)andeasternAsia(50.4cases).NotablylowincidenceratesinmenareestimatedincentralandwesternAfrica(2.0casesand1.7cases,respectively).Inwomen,theincidenceratesaregenerallylower,andthegeographicalpatternisslightlydifferent,mainlyreflectingdifferenthistoricalexposuretotobaccosmoking.Thehighestestimated2012incidenceratesinwomen(per100000women)areinNorthAmerica(33.8cases)andnorthernEurope(23.7cases),witharelativelyhighrateineasternAsia(19.2cases)andthelowestratesinwesternandcentralAfrica(1.1casesand0.8cases,respectively).

Lungcancerisalsothemostcommoncauseofdeathfromcancerworldwide,estimatedtoberesponsiblefornearly1in5cancerdeaths(1.59milliondeaths,19.4%ofthetotalnumberofcancerdeathsin2012).Becauseoflungcancer’shighrateoffatality(theoverallratioofmortalitytoincidenceis0.87)andtherelativelackofvariabilityinsurvivalindifferentworldregions,thegeographicalpatternsinlungcancermortalitycloselyfollowthoseinlungcancerincidence.
