Canvas CleanerArtists’ Statement

Art DirectionOverall, the art direction is focused on representing iconic styles of modern art such as impressionism, cubism, Dada, and Art Deco.

The scenes will transition in chronological order based on art periods. The actual art works will be based on those four styles. A roomba like character will traverse the maze and repair a painting in the process.

Artistic ContributionsTo truly compliment the idea of having an art history themed puzzle game, it’s important that what we create has a distinct impact upon the quality of the game.

It’s also a personal goal that the player gains some sort of art history knowledge as well. Our art will push this goal while also bringing large visual contributions to the game.

Research/ApplicationA lot of research on the modern styles of art will have to be done in order to capture the players attention, and evoke the kind of emotion that a lot historical artists like Picasso, Monet, Piet Mondrian, and many others did in their works.

The art style aims to capture a sort of museum-like refinement while presenting the bare emotion and meaning held within the works of famous artists.

Character DesignTo represent the player’s actions as a museum art restorer, we chose to have a Roomba-like robot travel across the painting. This creates a diegetic element, as the painting “cleans” as the player solves puzzles.Though the character won’t speak, giving it a ‘face’ allows for the robot to have more personality. The robot, which is still unnamed, is made to look like a janitorial cap.

UIFor the UI the backdrop will consist of a blank canvas as the painting is incomplete/damaged. The palette will serve as the frame with a reset and home button only the actual button is the paint splotch.

When the maze is complete the canvas will then turn to the fully restored painting. The buttons and the palette will have a drop shadow to create a sense of depth and make the scene more engaging

Art PipelineWith two artists and two programmers, it’s important that a clean pipeline for delivering assets can be kept. With an organized repository, this can easily be done.UI elements can be easily transferred and integrated as they will be made to scale with the screen dimensions. This will allow for a simple upload>download>place pipeline.

When each artist creates a new work of art to bring into the game, the process of integration will flow as such:

1. Either artist creates a painting to be scaled down to 1350x1080px. This is uploaded to the repository as a .psd and a .png.

2. The art is broken down into a grid of circles. This will likely be done by artists.

3. Each circle is isolated and also uploaded to the repository as a .png, to be used by the programmers.
