Thistalkexploresthecomplicatedprocessesofnation–statebuildingthroughitsmanifestationinthe“urbangeology”ofthecity—itsarchitecture,iconography,layout,andpoliticaluseofurbanspace.Overwhelmedbythechallengesresultingfromtheirurbanization,thegovernmentsseatedinmostofthesecapitalcitiesareineffectbothpowerful—wieldingpowerovertheirpopulace—andpowerless,unabletoimplementtheirplansandprovidefortheirinhabitants.
