Proper Adjectives

• Two words: the first is (usually) the name of a country

• *Swiss cheese• *Arabian horse• *American cheese

• *****Second word is NOT capitalized!

Check Point:• Turn to your neighbor and tell

them what a proper adjective is.

Relationships• 1. Mom / Dad as a name is

capitalized.– Ex: Dad is in the garage.- Ex: Mom will pick you up at 4:30 P.M.

2. When the word MY is used with a title such as mom or dad, DO NOT capitalize it.- EX : My mom took Billy Bob to the store.

Religious Terms• All terms associated with ANY

religion are capitalized.

-Ex: The Bible-Ex: The Koran-Ex: Christmas-Ex: Torah

Sections of the Country– 1. LARGE sections are capitalized – Ex: The North, out West

– 2. Directions use lower case letters– Ex: head west for two miles

TIME• A.M.• P.M.• ****Notice that there are periods

after each letter. This is correct!

Names of Transportation

• Amtrack• Greyhound• Midwest Airlines

Rule Breakers• These may not follow rules for

sentences, but ALWAYS capitalize the first line in a poem or outline

Quotations• 1. The first word in a direct quote.• (Ex: Suzy-Q said, “My pizza is getting cold.”)

• 2. If an interrupter is used, do not capitalize the entire quote.

• (Ex: “Yes”, said Billy, “the pizza is getting cold.”)

Greetings and Closings• Dear ______________• Sincerely, ____________• Your friend, ____________

• Pacific Ocean• Lake Michigan• Gulf of Mexico
